Nicholas Hoult Was Not A Happy Camper When He Found Out What The Ice Cream He Had To Eat For A Scene Actually Was

It’s clear that Nicholas Hoult would make an excellent guest on any talk show, given his knack for sharing fascinating anecdotes from his film sets. For instance, he once joked with Seth Meyers about being chased by wolves! Lately, he’s been dishing out more behind-the-scenes stories, such as the time he had to eat a peculiar substitute for ice cream in one of his movies. Believe it or not, you won’t guess what that fake ice cream was made of.

During promotions for his latest film “Nosferatu”, Hoult and co-star Lily Rose-Depp made an appearance on the evening show hosted by Jimmy Hill at Capital. Not surprisingly, the Skins actor felt compelled to share a spontaneous story about the one instance when he acted in a diva manner (as reported by @bestofhoult on X), and frankly, I can understand why he did so.

On one occasion, I behaved quite dramatically on set when I discovered that the “ice cream” for a scene wasn’t real ice cream at all. Given my anticipation for this treat, you can imagine how disappointed I was to find out it was actually lard colored and sweetened. It was a deceitful imitation of ice cream.

It’s hard to imagine anything more unfortunate than an accidental prank like this. Picture yourself longing for ice cream on a sweltering summer day, only to find a chunk of lard instead. It’s unclear which film it was that Hoult ingested the lard for, but perhaps it’s better not to know. I doubt I could watch whatever scene that occurs now without feeling queasy.

Currently, the actor known for his role in the X-Men series isn’t new to collaborating with food, considering he starred in the critically praised dark comedy The Menu. Interestingly, his response to the “ice cream” closely resembles his character from The Menu, who was quite the food connoisseur. However, consuming lard presents a unique kind of dread compared to the dramatic scenes unfolding in Ralph Fiennes’ fictitious restaurant.

I concur with the radio show host that Hoult’s response to the fake ice cream didn’t seem like typical diva behavior, as the actor himself explained the entire incident.

Initially, I found it extremely unappetizing when I was told I had to consume large amounts of this substance throughout the day. My response was something like, “What on earth is this?” To which they replied, “Oh, it’s lard. We anticipated the ice cream might melt due to the shooting conditions and heat.” My reaction was a firm, “No way! That’s not an option for me.” As a result, they quickly dashed off to Tesco’s nearby and got a big stock of real ice cream for me instead.

Hoult delivers a remarkable collection of performances, displaying some daring on-screen antics that leave me in awe and convinced he’s an exceptional talent. Nevertheless, regardless of what others may say, I don’t believe any actor is skillful enough to find pleasure in feasting on lard day after day. Even the thought makes my stomach churn.

If he’s the one from “The Order,” it’s understandable that he might never again eat food without checking first, given how traumatic the encounter seemed. This was his immediate reaction when the discussion shifted to the most disgusting things actors have encountered for movies, such as the real rats they dealt with during the filming of “Nosferatu.” It’s just that rats and ice cream aren’t usually found together, but this experience certainly left a lasting mark on him.

It’s fortunate that his portrayal of Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, scheduled for 2025, doesn’t seem to involve consuming any distasteful artificial food props. But if you’re in the mood for some chilling performances, check out what Nicholas Hoult is offering now – with Nosferatu playing in cinemas, and Juror #2 streaming on Max with a subscription.
