In a surprising turn of events, Lex Luthor appears far from being 85 years old, but it’s this milestone the infamous Superman antagonist is commemorating. To get in on the celebration, DC’s chief executive, James Gunn, has unveiled Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of the character in his upcoming movie. Recently, the director of the forthcoming Superman film featuring David Corenswet, posted a sneak peek behind-the-scenes photo of Hoult as Luthor, captured by VFX supervisor Stephane Ceretti, on the social media platform that used to be known as Twitter.
As I stand in front of a camera, the black-and-white snapshot captures me, Nicholas Hoult, portraying a chilling bald villain with an air of intensity. Even though the film is still in production, the ominous image promises a gripping performance that has already garnered favorable reviews from early viewers. Given Hoult’s impressive track record on the silver screen, I can hardly wait to see him devour the set with captivating villainy at its finest.
Nicholas Hoult Talks About Playing Lex Luthor in The New ‘Superman’
During an appearance on the podcast “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum”, Hoult openly discussed his audition process for James Gunn to portray the legendary villain. He commended Gunn for maintaining a lively and spontaneous atmosphere, encouraging improvisation by shouting suggestions from the monitors such as “Say this line. Do this! Do that!” – something that really appealed to Hoult.
He went on to say, “That encompasses my entire preparation process.” Essentially, he suggested, “Be as ready as you can be beforehand. That way, when you arrive, you can discard everything and act spontaneously in the moment.” These words of wisdom have likely been beneficial for Hoult throughout his acting career.
In my opinion as a movie enthusiast, I must give credit to Michael Rosenbaum for his captivating portrayal of Lex Luthor in the series. The first time I encountered this iconic character was through Rosenbaum’s interpretation, and it hooked me instantly. It was like watching my very own Superman adventures unfold, with Lex and all those captivating tales coming to life.
I have since watched Richard Donner’s movies and others featuring different performances, but none can compare to Rosenbaum’s portrayal. He truly stands out as the definitive Lex Luthor for me… It’s simply the best!
At MegaCon in Orlando, Hoult delved deeper into the moral complexities surrounding Superman and Lex Luthor, particularly their intricate past. When prompted by a fan about his thoughts on Luthor’s apprehension of Superman, Hoult proposed this thought (as reported by CBR): “If someone possesses unlimited power and the capacity to do anything, what transpires when their actions contradict everyone’s concept of what is right?” This question, indeed, holds relevance and timeliness in today’s context.
Regarding the topic of movies, when asked whether he prefers historical or superhero films, Hoult refused to choose and instead expressed his preference for both genres.
As a lover of narratives, I find myself drawn to the genre of superhero movies, which seem to be etched in the annals of our collective past. What particularly captivates me is the creative reinterpretation of history these films often embody. While they may not always stick rigidly to historical facts, they skillfully weave tales that resonate profoundly with contemporary issues, without overtly promoting any specific ideology.
James Gunn’s Superman stars Corenswet, Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nathan Fillion.
