As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia reading about Sabrina Caluori‘s departure from Paramount Global. Her journey through the realms of HBO and Nickelodeon mirrors my own adventures in the virtual world, filled with iconic characters, groundbreaking campaigns, and endless hours spent navigating industry currents.
A second top marketing executive is departing Paramount Global.
Sabrina Caluori, Nickelodeon and Paramount+’s executive vice president for kids and family marketing, is parting ways with the company. This decision coincides with the exit of Michael Engleman, the chief marketing officer for Paramount+ and Showtime. Notably, this move occurs as Paramount prepares for potential significant layoffs before its upcoming merger with Skydance.
For three years, Caluori has been part of Nickelodeon, and she was promoted to her current role in 2022. In a message to the staff (which you can read below in its entirety), she expressed that Nickelodeon was the very first brand she adored, and she commended her team for their recent accomplishments.
As a gamer, I can’t help but swell with pride over what we’ve collectively achieved together. However, it’s not just the victories that make me beam with satisfaction; it’s the unique gaming culture we’ve forged along the way. We’ve dived headfirst into the unpredictable, transformed the ordinary into extraordinary experiences, and tackled every challenge like a sponge soaks up water – eager, adaptable, and relentless. Each day, you’ve unleashed groundbreaking creations while sailing through the tides of gaming with the infectious optimism of SpongeBob SquarePants and the unwavering determination of his best friend, Patrick Star.
Last week, I learned that Paramount is planning to reduce its workforce by 15% within the U.S., aiming to save half a billion dollars in expenses. As part of their cost-saving measures, they’ve sold off two entertainment websites and made significant cuts to several cable networks’ sites. It seems like they’re focusing on streamlining operations to move forward more efficiently.
Before moving to Nickelodeon, Caluori had a twelve-year tenure at HBO, advancing to the position of Executive Vice President for Marketing and Digital Media. Here’s the message she sent to her team:
Team,
I’m writing to inform you that today marks the end of my three-year tenure at Paramount. It’s been quite messy, filled with challenges, much like dealing with slime!
Expressing thoughts similar to yours isn’t always straightforward. The first brand that won my heart was Nickelodeon. Working side by side with such an amazing team, bringing that affection to the children of today, including my own, feels like a cherished wish fulfilled.
I’m absolutely thrilled to express my gratitude for giving us the courage to showcase the unique “kidstincts” of your brand. Working together, we managed to reintroduce the beloved Splat symbol with a campaign that earned an Emmy award, slime-ified the Super Bowl, made Good Burger 2 the standout direct-to-streaming movie of the year, relaunched Dora in style, surpassed expectations at the Kids’ Choice Awards, connected with millions of kids on Roblox, and celebrated an incredible 25 years of SpongeBob with a grand, global campaign that raised the bar for creator marketing. (And trust me, there’s so much more to celebrate!)
As someone who has spent a significant portion of my life immersed in the vibrant world of entertainment, I must say that I am truly astounded by what we have managed to achieve together. But beyond the tangible accomplishments, it is the unique culture we’ve cultivated that stands out most vividly for me. It seems we’ve learned to embrace the unforeseen, transform the ordinary into extraordinary, and tackle challenges with an enthusiasm reminiscent of SpongeBob and the resilience of Patrick Star.
I’m firmly behind you as we move into this fresh phase. I’ll always be your most enthusiastic supporter, guide, and advisor. Don’t ever think twice about getting in touch with me.
Rooting for you always,
Sabrina
