As someone who grew up in the ’90s with a television set as my second home, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement hearing about Nickelodeon’s live-action and CGI hybrid feature film adaptation of Rugrats! The nostalgia is palpable, and the prospect of seeing Tommy Pickles and his gang once again causing trouble in our hearts is simply heartwarming.
The classic Nickelodeon series “Rugrats” is planning to make its way onto the silver screen! Right now, Paramount is working on an early development phase for a movie that combines live-action and CGI effects, based on the cherished ’90s animated children’s program.
Revisiting the fond memories of cherished characters, fans can look forward to the return of Tommy Pickles, his mischievous pals Chuckie Finster, Phil, and Lil DeVille, now reappearing in a movie set within the real world. At this point, it remains unclear which original TV cast members will make an appearance. The main quartet is joined by Angelica Pickles, her doll Cynthia (the bully), Tommy’s baby brother Dil Pickles, Spike the dog, and their parents Didi and Stu Pickles. Other characters expected to feature in the movie are Chas Finster, Drew and Charlotte Pickles, as well as Betty and Howard DeVille.
Actor Mikey Day, known from Saturday Night Live, is collaborating on the script with head writer Street Seidell. Karen Rosenfelt is overseeing the film adaptation along with co-creators Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó. Jason Moore, who has worked on Pitch Perfect and Tina Fey-Amy Poeheler’s comedy Sisters, is slated to direct. The romcoms Shotgun Wedding, starring Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel, is also in the works. This film adaptation is based on the Nickelodeon series that debuted in 1991 and ran for several seasons, a favorite among late Millennials. The show served as the foundation for numerous films within the same franchise such as The Rugrats Movie (1998), Rugrats in Paris (2000), and Rugrats Go Wild (2003). A spin-off series titled All Grown Up! and a Paramount+ reboot have also been released in 2021.
