As a long-time fan of Nicky Jam and someone who has grown up listening to his powerful beats and inspiring lyrics, I admire his courage and conviction. His decision to renounce his support for Donald Trump, following the racist remarks made by Tony Hinchcliffe, reflects his deep love and respect for Puerto Rico and its people.
On Wednesday, the well-known Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Nicky Jam changed his stance on supporting Donald Trump, expressing to his followers that he could no longer back the Republican candidate after racially charged comments made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe during a rally over the weekend.
Jam stated in Spanish that he backed Donald Trump because he thought it would benefit the U.S. economy, especially considering many Latinos reside there, among whom he counts himself. As an entrepreneur himself, Jam felt Trump’s business acumen made him the best choice.

Previously, I had the chance to show up at a Trump rally, where I was presented – unfortunately, with a mistake in my gender pronouns – by the Republican nominee who declared me as the “Latin music sensation Nicky Jam” and added, “ever heard of Nicky? She’s fiery!” Backstage, I took pictures with Trump. (As a gamer, I might say: In a past event, I attended a Trump rally, got misgendered by the nominee, who introduced me as “Nicky Jam,” a popular Latin music star, and joked about my appearance. I even snapped some selfies with Trump during the gathering.)
In his video posted on Wednesday, Jam expressed surprise, stating that he had never imagined a comedian would critique or speak negatively about Puerto Rico.
As a gamer, I’m choosing to withdraw my backing for Donald Trump and steer clear of political banter. Puerto Rico deserves nothing less than respect.
Hinchcliffe, who’s both a podcaster and a comedian, made some racially insensitive remarks at a Trump rally on Sunday. One of his comments was about Puerto Rico, joking that there’s an island of garbage floating in the ocean, apparently referring to Puerto Rico itself.
A number of notable celebrities from Puerto Rico, such as Aubrey Plaza, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, and Ricky Martin, have spoken out against the remarks.
On Tuesday, as reported by videos from the event, Plaza expressed gratitude that his beloved grandmother wasn’t present to hear that vile comment. If she were still alive, he speculated, she might have retorted, ‘Tony Hinchcliffe, you’re a jerk.’ And yes, The Wall Street Journal has my permission to use this quote.
