Nicholas Cage honored the late David Lynch, who passed away on January 15, 2025, by acknowledging that the film they collaborated on in 1990, “Wild at Heart,” was one of his finest productions throughout his extensive career. In an interview with Empire, Cage expressed his appreciation for Lynch as he liberated him from specific acting habits during filming.
Cage remarked, “I’ve never had as much enjoyment collaborating with anyone as I did with David Lynch. In my opinion, ‘Wild At Heart’ is among the finest films I’ve ever produced, a masterpiece that can’t be replicated by any other director.
Enjoying the film-making process was crucial for Cage’s liberation, as it opened up a fresh approach to acting for him. He elaborated:

Cage found a unique method of acting through enjoying the movie-making experience, which proved to be his pathway to freedom. He clarified:

The joy of film-making was the secret to Cage’s emancipation; it led him to explore an innovative acting technique. He elaborated on this:
I asked David if it was alright for me to enjoy myself while working on this movie, and he replied, “Nickster, not only is it acceptable, it’s essential.” At that point, I was working on films like ‘Birdie’ with Alan Parker, trying to emulate the intense style of Robert De Niro. However, David relieved me from all that stress by simply allowing me to enjoy myself on his set and have fun.

When I asked David if it was fine for me to have a good time while making this movie, he responded, “Nickster, not only is it acceptable, but necessary.” At the time, I was working on films like ‘Birdie’ with Alan Parker and was trying to mirror Robert De Niro’s intense style. But David eased my tension by granting me permission to enjoy myself and have fun on his set.
In Lynch’s direction and Cage’s performance, there’s an undeniable playful energy that shines through. It’s evident that they, along with co-star Laura Dern, were genuinely enjoying themselves during the filming process, even amidst the film’s heavy themes and graphic violence scenes. As Lynch emphasizes, maintaining a sense of fun is crucial, as it aligns with the emotional development of the characters. After all, just like Sailor and Lula, they too are living it up amidst all the challenges.
Cage Called Lynch “A Singular Genius in Cinema”
In this instance, Cage has made his second public remark about Lynch, and for the second time, he highlighted the enjoyment he derived from working on set. Immediately following news of Lynch’s demise, Cage issued a statement to Deadline which stated:

Cage’s full quote from his Deadline statement would read as follows: “I am deeply saddened by the loss of David Lynch. He was a brilliant artist and an extraordinary human being. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him, and I will always cherish the memories we made on set. The fun we had together will stay with me forever.
David Lynch was an exceptional cinematic talent, one of the greatest artists in any era… He was fearless, intellectually brilliant, and a trailblazer with an infectious humor… I’ve never had as much fun on a film set as when working with David Lynch. He will forever be a treasure.
In a heartfelt homage, Dern, who starred alongside Lynch in “Wild at Heart”, penned a touching tribute to him on what would have been his 79th birthday. This was published in the Los Angeles Times. In this piece, she recounted memories from their collaborations on projects like “Blue Velvet”, “Inland Empire”, and “Twin Peaks: The Return”. Among these reminiscences were the origins of their unique nicknames for each other, one being “tidbit”. She concluded her heartfelt letter by expressing this.
Your influence has indelibly marked every form of art, whether it’s movies, music, paintings, cartoons, or even the weather report – they all turned into a realm for daydreaming… You lived with constant gratitude and grace. You never tasted bitterness. Throughout your life, you always felt blessed.
It is announced that Lynch will receive the esteemed 2025 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement from the Writers Guild of America posthumously, with Kyle MacLachlan, a frequent collaborator and friend, presenting the award on February 15.
