Actor Nicolas Cage is set to create quite a chilling impact with his upcoming psychological thriller, “The Surfer,” due for release in theaters on May 2, 2025. The first teaser and poster for this “sun-scorched horror” have been unveiled by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions (see below). In this new film, it’s not just the sun causing the heatwave, as Cage portrays a father drawn into a beach turf war. The movie’s plot synopsis suggests that the tension escalates rapidly to a boiling point.
A person goes back to the peaceful beach he knew as a child for a father-son surfing trip. However, his longing to ride the waves is hindered by a local group who enforce their rule: ‘reside here, surf here.’ Feeling embarrassed and enraged, this individual becomes embroiled in a dispute that escalates along with the scorching temperatures of summer, ultimately pushing him to the brink.
In 2024 at the Cannes Film Festival, Lorcan Finnegan’s film titled The Surfer, scripted by Thomas Martin, garnered a six-minute standing ovation upon its debut. This movie has been embraced warmly by critics and boasts an impressive 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Notably, the critics have commended John Cage’s “engaging” portrayal of the main character. The poster for the film features him, as the central figure, standing before a vehicle emblazoned with “locals only,” dressed in a wetsuit and slightly perplexed, clutching his surfboard under his arm.
The cast is expanded to include Julian McMahon, known for Fantastic Four, Nicholas Cassim from Mr Inbetween, Miranda Tapsell of The Sapphires, Alexander Bertrand who appeared in American Gangster, and Justin Rosniak recognized for War Machine.
The Cage Craze Is Showing No Signs of Slowing Down
In recent years, Cage has successfully revitalized his career by demonstrating his versatility as an actor, particularly excelling in horror films like “Mandy” and “Color Out of Space.” Last year alone, he featured in three spine-chilling productions: “Longlegs,” which became the highest-grossing independent horror film of the last decade; “Arcadian,” a controversial release that found renewed popularity on streaming platforms; and “The Surfer,” set to hit theaters this May.
It can be confidently stated that the actor who won an Oscar is currently enjoying a remarkable comeback, making him extremely sought-after. Consequently, he’s agreeing to an increasing number of ventures. In the near future, moviegoers will witness him portray the iconic football coach John Madden in a fresh film by David O. Russell. Moreover, Cage is set to reappear as Yuri Orlov in a follow-up to 2005’s Lord of War, and he plans to hone his woodworking abilities in The Carpenter’s Son. However, these projects will have to wait until Cage makes an impact with The Surfer.
