Nicolas Cage’s ‘The Surfer’ Lands at Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions

As a huge fan of Nicolas Cage and his electrifying acting abilities, I am beyond thrilled to hear that Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions have acquired the North American rights for “The Surfer,” a new psychological thriller from director Lorcan Finnegan. I can’t contain my excitement, knowing that we will get to witness Cage in yet another captivating role.

As an assistant or fan, I’d put it this way: I’m thrilled to share that Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions have acquired the North American rights for “The Surfer,” a gripping psychological thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan. In this film, Nicolas Cage delivers an exceptional performance as a beach bum teetering on the brink of insanity. The partnership between these production companies is a strategic move to ride the upcoming box office wave with such an intriguing and suspenseful project.

In 2025, the fourth film from Vivarium’s director and writer Thomas Martin will hit theaters. This movie sees John Cage portray a father who goes back to his Australian coastal hometown after many years spent living in the United States.

When Cage’s character clashes with a group of surfers who assert dominance over Luna Bay, the hidden coastal gem of his childhood in southwest Australia, their conflict intensifies and the situation spins rapidly out of hand.

“Lorcan’s film offers a breathtaking visual feast, enhanced by an impressive color scheme, with Nicolas Cage delivering an exceptional performance,” was a comment made by Lauren Bixby, senior vice president of acquisitions and co-productions at Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

As a huge fan, I’d describe it this way: I was absolutely thrilled when I discovered that “The Surfer” was filmed in Australia and premiered at Cannes Film Festival outside the competition. The star-studded cast includes Julian McMahon, Nic Cassim, Miranda Tapsell, Alexander Bertrand, Justin Rosniak, Rahel Romahn, Finn Little, and Charlotte Maggi. I can’t wait to see their performances! Additionally, this impressive production is brought to us by the talented team of producers: Cage, Darby, James Harris, Robert Connolly, James Grandison, Brunella Cocchiglia, and Nathan Klingher. These names alone make me confident that “The Surfer” will be a must-watch film.

The following individuals – Apur Parikh, Robert Patterson, Lorcan Finnegan, Mark Lane, Michael Rothstein, Sam Hall, Ford Corbett, Mark Fasano, Ryan Winterstern, Josh Harris, Greg Friedman, Jatin Desai, and François Tétaz – are serving as executive producers.

WME Independent acted as intermediary for the filmmakers in finalizing the distribution agreement for “The Surfer”. International sale of the film will be managed by North Five Six.
