Nicole Kidman Is “Learning All About Autopsies” for Amazon’s Patricia Cornwell Thriller ‘Scarpetta’

As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming series “Scarpetta” and Nicole Kidman’s latest film “Babygirl” are two highly anticipated additions to my cinematic calendar.

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, the incredibly active actress Nicole Kidman shared some tidbits about an upcoming venture: the Prime Video series named Scarpetta. This series is adapted from Patricia Cornwell‘s novels and revolves around Kay Scarpetta, a medical examiner in the title role. Kidman is currently immersing herself in the character, revealing, “I’m getting acquainted with autopsies… I have a pretty good idea of where all the body parts go.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on an upcoming series that has piqued my interest. Announced in February 2023, this production, jointly spearheaded by the talented Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis, promises a captivating journey.

Known for her work on “Lost” and “Barry”, Liz Sarnoff will take on the roles of writer, executive producer, and showrunner for an upcoming series. Along with Curtis and Kidman, the production will be handled by Blumhouse Television and David Gordon Green, who is also slated to direct the initial two episodes. This project brings Green and Curtis together again, as they starred in Green’s “Halloween” trilogy, where Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode from the 1978 original film.

Kidman said of the series:

For almost two decades, I’ve been chasing after the character of Scarpetta, from its initial conception as a feature film, all the way up to now. Joining forces with the remarkable Jamie Lee Curtis, Prime Video, Jason Blum, and David Gordon Green on the Liz Sarnoff series adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s incredible and exhilarating books feels like it was destined to happen. I am beyond excited to embody Kay Scarpetta and deeply grateful to Patricia Cornwell for giving me this opportunity.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve learned that Amazon has greenlit two seasons and a total of sixteen episodes for the series called “Scarpetta”. At present, they haven’t disclosed any release dates yet.

Kidman Called Her Role in ‘Babygirl’ As a “Calling”

In the same interview with Hollywood Reporter, Nicole Kidman discussed her character in the hotly anticipated movie titled “Babygirl“. Directed by Halina Reijn (known for “Bodies Bodies Bodies“), this film revolves around Romy, a CEO who embarks on an affair with a younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson. When asked why she referred to the role as a “calling”, Kidman explained:

Often, women find themselves devalued or objectified during certain stages of their careers based on their sexuality. It was truly refreshing to be portrayed in a different light. Upon reading the script, I instantly thought, “This is an unexplored perspective, this is uncharted territory, I don’t believe audiences have encountered it before.” My character has advanced to a point where she wields immense power, yet she questions her identity, aspirations, and desires, despite appearing to have it all. I believe many women can relate to this situation: “I’ve achieved so much, I have children, a husband, but who am I really? What do I truly want? What are my true desires? Do I need to pretend to be someone else for people to accept me?” I find this film liberating, and I hope it will be as well.

The prolific actress certainly challenges herself in the role. Shooting the racier scenes often got quite tense, so much so that Kidman needed pauses during filming to avoid burning out.
