Nigel Xavier's Upcycled Knitwear Is a Maximalist's Dream

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant, eclectic worlds of virtual fashion design games, I can confidently say that Nigel Xavier’s “Crochet Collection” is a breathtaking masterpiece that would give any in-game designer a run for their pixels.

Last year, I was crowned the winner of the second season of “Next in Fashion,” pocketing a cool $200,000 USD and scoring a chance to sell my designs on Rent the Runway. Since then, I’ve been working hard to perfect my unique upcycling design style, often involving repurposed, frayed, and patchworked denim – earning me the nickname “the denim wizard.” However, my fashion vocabulary isn’t confined to just one fabric. Recently, I’ve introduced a vibrant collection of crochet pieces that seamlessly blend into my maximalist design ethos.

Xavier shared with TopMob the story behind his line, stating that he transformed old crochet blankets into various styles. His fascination with vibrant tropical wardrobes and colorful architecture sparked this idea. A recent visit to Brazil, where he admired the intricate Baroque structures firsthand, influenced the vivid patterns in his knitwear. However, Xavier has harbored a long-standing desire to make a significant impact with his crochet designs. He explained that while he’s dabbled in knitwear before, he decided to concentrate intensely on crochet for this collection because it’s an area he’s always been captivated by.

Just like typical Xavier style, the assortment bursts with confident declarations; to the extent that the designer himself struggles to single out a standout item from the entire collection. With a chuckle, he admits, “Every piece is a star item for me.” It’s hard to choose just one.

Among his bold creations are crochet sweaters in a soft baby blue shade adorned with floral patterns on geometric backgrounds, as well as zip-up styles featuring horizontal stripes of blue and red. In other areas, sweaters have been intentionally distressed for a dramatic look; off-the-shoulder tops feature delicate flowers cascading from their sleeves, while hoodies showcase intricate crochet designs reminiscent of tribal chieftains.

In this collection, denim is introduced in various items such as pants, shorts, and hats. These pieces artfully combine Xavier’s unique fabric with floral knit sections. On ripped jeans, the designer’s whimsical crochet details emerge from pockets and descend the legs like a checkerboard pattern; while on reworked bucket hats, his yarns bring a refreshing touch with vibrant colors. It wouldn’t feel like a Nigel Xavier collection without some patchwork denim accents.

You can now purchase Nigel Xavier’s “Crochet Creations” directly from his online store. Don’t forget to browse through the collection showcased in the campaign, beautifully captured by Shamaal Bloodman, as displayed above.
