Supporting Nintendo seems quite natural in this situation, given that they are re-releasing PS4 games on their new platform (PS5), while Xbox appears to be neglecting its exclusives. Nintendo’s commitment to gameplay over graphics, production of high-quality titles, and ambitious plans for the Switch 2 make them appear as the ethical choice in this gaming landscape.
But everything fell apart when the company revealed that gold points were being revoked. Soon after, it was found out that the $100 gift vouchers could not be used for the forthcoming Switch 2 video games.
Regardless of the excellent games Nintendo produces, they can’t truly be considered a “morally sound” gaming company. In truth, every gaming corporation places profit above people.
In certain situations, Nintendo may appear as a more favorable choice, yet in other instances, they could be quite troublesome or problematic.
To maintain impartiality, it’s notable that this company has demonstrated poise during its most significant stumbles. An instance of this is when their flagship product, the Wii U, failed to meet expectations. In response, President Satoru Iwata voluntarily reduced his salary by half, aiming to spare the company from layoffs. However, the financial struggles persisted, leading Iwata to further decrease his salary by half again, as even some high-quality games couldn’t reverse the Wii U’s lack of profitability.
It’s striking to note that while companies such as Activision Blizzard and Microsoft have been known for downsizing even during their most prosperous periods, Nintendo historically has avoided such moves. Regrettably, this trend continues today, with NetEase Games recently laying off a large number of Marvel Rivals staff members.
Despite their notable achievements in the gaming world, Nintendo is not without blame as a significant gaming corporation. An individual who hacked the Switch now finds himself obligated to give 30% of his income to this company indefinitely. Additionally, they have shut down numerous fan projects that didn’t generate profit, demonstrating an apparent dislike for others leveraging their intellectual properties.
It was neither shocking nor pleasing when my Nintendo Gold Points were taken away. Although there’s a possibility that the company might introduce a new rewards system, it seems they no longer wish to provide discounts for fans. Just remember, these discounts weren’t substantial to start with, so the removal of them feels rather trivial.
We share the same sentiments regarding the unavailability of Gift Vouchers for Switch 2 games. It’s unfortunate that Nintendo decided to discontinue them. The previous offer of purchasing two brand-new Switch games for $100 was a great bargain, particularly for those who were buying Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom at $70. Learning that this deal won’t be repeated is disheartening.
The voucher was a unique selling point that set Nintendo apart from Sony and Microsoft. Removing it from their next-generation console leaves us a bit underwhelmed.
Instead of encouraging fans to boycott Nintendo or the Switch 2, we advocate that they spend their resources on things that bring them joy. It’s disheartening to witness a company that has earned such positive regard potentially squander some of that goodwill for financial gain.
Then again, this is Nintendo we’re talking about.
