As a gamer, experiencing a playable tech demo feels like a fantastic opportunity when it comes to consoles. It allows us to dive into a game while also learning more about the platform we’re playing on. Normally, these demos are free. However, with Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, it seems they’ll be charging for this preview, which is quite unusual but still exciting!
In a similar fashion to how PlayStation introduced Astro’s Playroom when unveiling the PS5, it seems Nintendo might follow suit with the upcoming Switch 2, but there’s a twist – unlike its predecessor, this game won’t come at no cost. (As previously discussed, it won’t be free.)
Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour
At the April 2nd Nintendo Direct presentation, they unveiled a tech demo for the new console called “Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour”. Although this demo includes some mini-games that offer a general understanding of the console’s features, it essentially consists of a few simple mini-games intended to showcase the fundamental capabilities of the Switch 2 as a gaming system.
Similar to Astro’s Playroom, Welcome Tour seems to be a collection of games designed within the universe of the hypothetical Nintendo Switch 2 console. These games provide a glimpse into the functionalities of the Switch 2, including its motion control and mouse setup capabilities.

As a passionate gamer, I found it peculiar when Nintendo decided to charge for a paid tech demo, considering most demos traditionally come complimentary with consoles. On the other hand, Sony’s Astro’s Playroom was pre-installed on the console, offering players a sneak peek at the new DualSense controller’s capabilities. Similarly, the tech demo for Valve’s Steam Deck transports you into the captivating world of Portal, showcasing its innovative features.
It’s puzzling why Nintendo might ask for payment for a tech demo, but perhaps there are extra features included in the game. For instance, Astro’s Playroom was a full game, though its main storyline is around 3 hours long. Maybe Welcome Tour could offer replay value, but it feels unusual to charge for something that is often provided for free.
Hopefully Welcome Tour doesn’t come with too hefty a price tag.
The Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5.
