As a lifelong gamer with fond memories of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), I can’t help but be excited about Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. The NES was my gateway drug to video games, and the experiences I had with Mario, Kirby, Zelda, and other iconic franchises shaped my love for gaming that lasts to this day.
Today, many gamers, ideally, have experienced the realm of the Nintendo Entertainment System in some capacity. This system was a game-changer for the industry following Atari’s downfall, as it brought beloved titles like Super Mario, Kirby, The Legend of Zelda, and countless other iconic gaming franchises into households around the world.
Experience the vibrant, nostalgic journey through Nintendo’s history with Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. This game offers you a fresh take on classic 8-bit adventures, featuring unique challenges in beloved titles such as Super Mario Bros and Balloon Fight. Relive the excitement of Nintendo’s first-party NES games in their entirety, but this time with new gameplay twists.
In a similar fashion to NES Remix for Wii U, you’ll encounter tests embedded in thirteen beloved classics. Initially, these tasks are straightforward: quickly grab the first mushroom in Super Mario Bros or snatch the Morph Ball in Metroid. However, unlike the distinct challenges presented in NES Remix, Nintendo World Championships focuses solely on speed.
In the offline Speedrun mode, you progress from less complex tasks that can be mastered quickly, unlocking harder missions as you earn stars based on your mission performance. This straightforward yet captivating system encourages you to keep pushing through levels in familiar games and even tempts you to explore new titles with limited experience.
Although I’m a big fan of Super Mario Bros and Metroid, I haven’t spent much time on games like Excitebike or Balloon Fight in the past. But as I worked my way through additional challenges, I not only experienced various levels of these titles, but also managed to excel at certain stages.
If Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition consisted only of its offline speedrun mode, it would be quite disappointing and hardly worth purchasing for anyone except as a free addition to NSO. But, beyond the main mode, Nintendo provides an engaging and challenging online feature where you can measure your skills against other dedicated NES enthusiasts.
In these online games, you compete against other players to set the fastest completion times in designated missions. The design isn’t particularly innovative, but the execution is exceptional. NES classics are reimagined in surprising ways, bringing a new level of excitement. Racing through Metroid’s lengthy hallways or rushing to obtain The Legend of Zelda’s sword becomes thrilling as you strive to outdo a few opponents by the smallest of margins.
In isolation, the Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition doesn’t compare to the excitement of NES Remix or NES Remix 2. However, when you add its online feature into the mix, this modest collection of classic ROMs transforms into a fresh and engaging experience. Although the game choices are limited and diversity is lacking, it offers an excellent platform for competitive gaming across Nintendo’s legendary library.
