“No One Needs Xbox,” Says Phantom Blade Zero Developer

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must confess that the gaming landscape has evolved significantly over the years, and so have my preferences. The recent revelations about Phantom Blade Zero and Black Myth: Wukong’s choices regarding their platform releases have piqued my interest.

Story Highlights

  • Phantom Blade Zero dev has explicitly stated that no one “needs” Xbox.
  • The platform is not very popular in Asia so releasing games on it does not make sense.
  • PlayStation lends a major helping hand to studios basically publishing the game for them.

According to a recent report by Game Plays Cassi, who covered this year’s ChinaJoy event, a representative from the Phantom Blade Zero development team stated that the game will not be available on Xbox when asked about its platform compatibility.

At the same event, the creators behind the game Phantom Blade Zero, known as S-Game, primarily demonstrated their titles using a PlayStation console.

In response to being asked why, the creators of Phantom Blade Zero explained that Xbox isn’t particularly prominent in Asia, making it unnecessary for them to launch their game on this console. Additionally, PlayStation offers developers unique debugging tools and sometimes even dispatches its own engineers, which significantly aids these studios.

On the other hand, the Xbox ecosystem is very overloaded so developing games for them is very hard.

PlayStation Helps In Publishing Games

Similarly to Black Myth: Wukong from Game Science, it too made an appearance at ChinaJoy and unveiled its title through PlayStation. Just as Phantom Blade Zero, the studio isn’t bound by any exclusive partnership with Sony or PlayStation and plans to release the game on Xbox Series consoles as well.

Developers made it clear to their followers that PlayStation plays a significant role in helping them publish games, yet they retain the freedom to decide where their games ultimately appear.

In some regions, the low popularity of Xbox consoles is a primary reason why certain game studios choose not to develop exclusivity deals for these systems. This was indicated by the developers of Phantom Blade Zero and Black Myth Wukong. The latter title, initially planned for release on August 20, 2024, will be available on PlayStation 5 and PC platforms, with an Xbox Series version scheduled to follow at a later date.
