‘No Other Land’ Filmmaker Beaten and Detained, Claims Co-Director and Activist Group

It’s been reported by a fellow filmmaker that one of the joint directors of the Academy Award-winning documentary “No Other Land” was brutally assaulted and subsequently arrested.

On Monday, Israeli director Yuval Abraham asserted on the platform X (previously known as Twitter) that a band of settlers had violently assaulted Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal. According to Abraham’s post, Ballal was subsequently apprehended by Israeli military personnel. “He sustained injuries to his head and abdomen, with bleeding,” wrote Abraham. “Soldiers stormed the ambulance he summoned and took him away.

Furthermore, the Associated Press reported that members of the Center for Jewish Nonviolence claimed a violent incident occurred when settlers supposedly attacked Susiya village, Ballal’s birthplace located within the Masafer Yatta region. The group also stated that Ballal was arrested while in an ambulance.

Or:

The Associated Press has mentioned that members of Center for Jewish Nonviolence asserted that a violent event transpired as settlers are said to have assaulted Susiya village, where Ballal originates from (being part of Masafer Yatta). The group also confirmed that Ballal was taken into custody while in an ambulance.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “I heard from locals that the ones who grabbed Ballal were part of a swift-action team, mostly settlers from neighboring communities, according to a report in Haaretz. Later, they handed him over to other soldiers, as per the same report.

The Hollywood Reporter has made contact with both the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the Center for Jewish Peaceful Resistance (Center for Jewish Nonviolence), seeking their responses.

At the 97th Academy Awards held on March 2nd, the documentary No Other Land, co-directed by four filmmakers (two Israelis and two Palestinians), was awarded the Best Documentary prize.

More to come.
