The Culture and Sports Minister of Israel expressed that the Best Documentary Oscar win for “No Other Land” on Sunday evening was a “disheartening moment” for the global film industry.
In a recent post on X, Miki Zohar stated that the filmmakers from a Palestinian-Israeli collaborative group intentionally boosted stories that misrepresent Israel’s image to global viewers. The as-yet undistributed film, titled “No Other Land“, portrays the demolition of Masafer Yatta region in the occupied West Bank by Israeli troops and the bond that forms between Palestinian journalist and co-director Basel Adra and his Israeli counterpart and co-director Yuval Abraham.
Previously, “No Other Land” had amassed numerous accolades globally, including from the International Documentary Association and Spirit Awards. At the Oscars, it surpassed films such as “Black Box Diaries,” “Porcelain War,” “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat,” and “Sugarcane.
The social media statement from Zohar follows in full:
The victory of the film “No Other Land” at the Oscars is a disheartening event for the global cinema community. Rather than portraying the intricacies of Israeli life, the filmmakers opted to exaggerate stories that skew Israel’s depiction for international viewers. While freedom of expression is a significant principle, using it to defame Israel for global promotion purposes is not art—it is an act of sabotage against the State of Israel, particularly in light of the October 7th massacre and the ongoing conflict.
We enacted a change in state-funding for cinema specifically so that taxpayer dollars would support artistic creations that resonate with our local audience, instead of an industry that uses its platform to criticize Israel negatively on a global scale.
