There are numerous excellent TV series distributed across multiple streaming platforms, which is fantastic except for one issue: they’re streamed in the first place. The absence of standard network airing schedules means fans of shows like “Severance,” “The Last of Us,” and “The White Lotus” often have to wait years between seasons (yes, it was a three-year gap between the first and second season of “Severance”). However, Noah Wyle, the veteran actor from “ER” who stars in and produces the hit new Max series “The Pitt,” expressed hope that he gets to continue playing Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch for a long time, as reported by Variety.
In an interview, Wyle expressed that, given the opportunity, he’d like “The Pitt” to continue running for a considerable period, having worked on it alongside R. Scott Gemmill and John Wells, former colleagues from “ER”.
In an ideal scenario, this series could span multiple seasons, allowing us to take our time with the storyline. A captivating journey lies ahead for the character, as expressed by Wyle. However, when Vary suggested that perhaps “The Pitt” could match the 15-season run of “ER,” Wyle humorously responded, implying doubts about their ability to last that long. He jokingly added, “I’m not sure we can go 15 seasons. That would make me 68. ‘Dr. Robby, you must retire!'” Keep in mind that “ER” is the second-longest running primetime medical drama on television, with “Grey’s Anatomy” holding the top spot.
HBO and Max’s content chief Casey Bloys says he shares Noah Wyle’s vision for The Pitt
In a fortunate turn of events for Noah Wyle, Casey Bloys, the CEO and chairman of HBO and Max’s original content, shares his viewpoint – a point he elaborated on during an interview with Vulture titled “Max’s Big Bet on ‘The Pitt’ Paid Off”. As Bloys explains, “The Pitt” evokes the spirit of network TV shows from the past that typically had over 20 episodes per season. Despite expressing a desire for more than 15 episodes, “The Pitt” will still adhere to this number. Interestingly, Bloys also mentioned that the show is intended to air annually in January, much like its predecessors.
Another significant aspect of this model, which is not commonly seen these days, is that the second season will debut in January 2026, a year after the premiere. As per Bloys’ confirmation (given his role in the matter more than Wyle), this model featuring more episodes helps reduce the gap between seasons. On our platform, shows such as ‘House of the Dragon,’ ‘The Last of Us,’ and ‘White Lotus’ typically take two years to produce. However, what I find appealing about The Pitt is that we can create 15 episodes in a single year, which significantly enhances our content on the platform. I aim to produce more shows with this format.” Bloys further mentioned that his programming lineup needs to be varied and while ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘House of the Dragon’ are excellent “big-event” shows, they only offer a few weeks of viewer interaction. Shows like The Pitt contribute to maintaining a full schedule by providing ongoing engagement.
Apart from the initial plan, Bloys had another idea for Max that he’s been faithful to so far. Instead of broadcasting new episodes of shows exclusive to streaming platforms like Netflix during late hours, Bloys proposed a more suitable approach for Max. When he began with the Max platform, he questioned, “Why are we releasing shows at midnight?” The response he received was along the lines of needing as much data from the previous night for reporting purposes, but it didn’t resonate with him. “People prefer scheduled television,” Bloys stated. “While most viewers of ‘The Pitt’ or ‘The White Lotus’ will watch beyond premiere night, I still think there is significance in having a release day and time. We’ve become more astute about how and when people are watching on streaming platforms and how to track that data. Therefore, I advocate for releasing shows on Thursday nights or Sunday nights.” For Max exclusives like “The Pitt,” making it scheduled television in this manner is quite smart, and indeed, it airs every Thursday at 9 P.M. EST.
What drove Noah Wyle to make The Pitt in the first place?
It’s clear that “The Pitt” is likely to run for a while, airing annually unless there are any unexpected issues… But let me tell you how Noah Wyle became part of the series after starring as Dr. John Carter on “ER” for 11 seasons. In an interview with Variety, he mentioned that during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, he felt a sense of responsibility due to his past role as a fictional doctor. Reflecting on the impact of the pandemic on medical professionals, Wyle felt compelled to provide them a platform on TV. He was quite direct when speaking with Adam B. Vary about this endeavor.
Wyle expressed his frustration to Vary, stating, ‘It’s maddening to see those who selflessly serve others having their abilities questioned.’ He finds it maddening that there’s still debate about the effectiveness of masks in preventing disease transmission. He’s frustrated that we’re not acknowledging the importance of vaccines in eliminating diseases. Overall, he finds it all maddening that we find ourselves in this current situation. Consequently, he wanted to create a show that underscores the undeniable truth about medical facts.’
Essentially, it appears that Wyle is once again gracing our screens with his medical performances, and in the 13th episode, he gives an outstanding performance following the loss of a specific patient. This powerful scene may very well be included in his Emmy nomination submissions during award season. Initially, Wyle was quite modest about acknowledging his achievements, but when Vary praised a scene where Dr. Robby, played by Wyle, breaks down crying in a pediatric ward functioning as a temporary morgue after a massive casualty event, Wyle accepted the compliment graciously.
In a humble manner, Wyle admitted that there are instances when he acknowledges his proficiency in certain areas after 35 years of honing his skills. These moments make him feel akin to Kobe Bryant, filled with excitement whenever he gets the chance to demonstrate his abilities. Indeed, he should be thrilled since “The Pitt” offers an ideal platform for an actor like Wyle and gives him even more creative freedom this time around.
“The Pitt” is streaming on Max now.
