As a gamer who’s lived through decades of gaming culture that often overlooked women and mothers, reading about Justine Lupe’s experience on the set of ‘Nobody Wants This‘ was like stepping into a breath of fresh air. It feels like we’re finally witnessing a shift in the industry, not just for gaming but also for Hollywood.
In Hollywood, there’s a shift, particularly for expectant parents, and especially mothers. This is evident in productions like Netflix’s Nobody Wants This, one of the top rom-coms of the 2024 Fall TV season, where four pregnant women were part of the cast and crew. Despite a harmonious atmosphere between cast and team, stories about Justine Lupe’s experience were being shared that portrayed it in a negative light.
The Succession vet set out to make the record straight, however, by adding to her Instagram a series of pregnancy shots taken while working on the hit 2024 Netflix series. The 35-year-old mother had only positive things to say about how the streaming giant’s team, along with the show’s cast and crew, treated her. She opened by saying:
I want to clarify that the cast and crew did know I was pregnant as soon as it was safe to share.
Lupe made it clear that she shared her happy news once the baby had grown enough, considering both safety and emotional aspects. She proceeded to discuss the overwhelming excitement surrounding her announcement, which included her TV sister Kristen Bell, her showrunner boss Erin Foster, Netflix executives, and even the cinematographer and wardrobe team who frequently accommodated her comfort on set. This wasn’t the end, though; the actress from Mr. Mercedes also revealed that they collaborated with her regularly to ensure a comfortable work environment during her pregnancy.
After highlighting the backing she received from her fellow actors and crew, she expanded her discussion to encompass industry standards and traditions. The former star of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” went on to say:
As a gamer, I’ve often pondered upon the perception that motherhood spells the end of one’s career in this captivating world. The whispering rumor mill suggests it as an unspoken rule: a death knell for ambitions. But I challenge this narrative. I believe our industry should embrace, not dismiss, the incredible transition into parenthood. After all, every new chapter of life is an opportunity to grow and bring fresh perspectives to gaming.
She openly expresses her joy and favorable experience on set, yet admits that this fresh phase in her career is indeed still unfolding. This applies to any woman benefiting from increased professional backing within the industry. Despite encountering unwanted advice or off-topic comments, she’s handled such instances gracefully, as evident by her recent statement.
And the narrative isn’t based on nothing, there is a long history of this being the case, but I do think that things are changing!
The Instagram post has garnered a tremendous amount of affectionate messages and encouragement for one of the funniest family members slated to appear in the 2024 TV lineup. Frankly, Lupe’s on-screen dynamic with Bell seems to surpass even that of Bell and Brody. Among the numerous comments expressing love for Lupe were:
- Showrunner of Nobody Wants This, Erin Foster: My only fear was that you stole my thunder as the newest pregnant person on set ❤️
- Esther of Nobody Wants This, Jackie Tohn: THIS. THIS. THIS.
- The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel herself Rachel Brosnahan: 💙💙💙

It made it possible for me to enjoy myself, ease into whatever was necessary for my health that day. Because every day was different (bus sleeping, altitudes, weather changes, pregnancy!) I’m so thankful to all of them. And very happy to hear your story enabled, supported and celebrated you! Congrats mama! 🔥🙌
As stars and public figures, like Lupe, continue to share their positive professional experiences regarding their pregnancy, the better for everyone. Catch her and the rest of the supportive gang on Nobody Wants This with a Netflix subscription. We can’t wait for Season 2 to hopefully match our hopes for Joanne and Noah’s story!.
