As someone who has spent countless hours traversing the Nordic landscapes, from the fjords of Norway to the icy plains of Finland, I have to say, Norm Architects has outdone themselves with their latest masterpiece – the Iris restaurant in Hardangerfjord, Norway.
Design studio Norm Architects unveils a new dining space concept, tailored for the Michelin-starred eatery Iris, nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of Hardangerfjord, Norway.
Nestled within the captivating Salmon Eye creation by Kvorning Design, I find myself in the tranquil haven of the Iris restaurant. The interior exudes a soothing ambiance, deliberately contrasting the bold and metallic exterior.
Due to the unique design of the building with flowing arches, custom-made furniture was required to fit harmoniously within these curves and against the walls. The lighting is gentle, and most materials are derived from nature. The color scheme is subdued yet cozy, intended to create a contrast with the stainless steel scales that adorn the outside of the spherical structure.
The design emphasizes tactility, using textured walnut wood, plush carpets, and upholstered furniture to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Given its position overlooking the ocean, which can be exposed to severe Nordic weather, careful attention was given to details that would make the restaurant feel snug and shielded from the elements.
Architects blend walnut wood’s organic textures and fluid shapes with custom-made furniture and rounded features to create a cozy and harmonious ambiance. By skillfully incorporating natural materials, they elevate the tactile experience and tie the dining area to its surrounding nature, emphasizing the restaurant’s dedication to eco-friendliness and sensory involvement.
In a spatial arrangement, the architects transformed the single expansive space in the room into multiple smaller areas. They believe this setup will create intrigue among visitors, allowing them to uncover the restaurant’s charm bit by bit, as opposed to being overwhelmed with its beauty immediately upon entering.
Take a look around the space via the gallery above, and for more, visit the Iris website.
