Not Canon

showrunner Tony Gilroy shoots down a long-running fan theory as simply “not canon.”

As for the speculation surrounding the fan theory about a possible romantic relationship between Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor and Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, who were central figures in 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, Gilroy has now shared his perspective. He stated, “Given my involvement with ‘Rogue’, I believe the relationship isn’t contradictory to the circumstances.” He then outlined several points that make the film’s environment conducive for a blossoming romance between these two characters.

Despite the fervor surrounding the theory among fans who see it as one of the greatest love stories ever, Gilroy remains hesitant to adopt it. He acknowledged, “There are many who have put a lot of time and effort into this, whole fan-fiction collections even, but it’s not something I can validate.” It’s with some reservation that he distances himself from their investment, but it doesn’t influence his creative process in building the show.

The Relationship Isn’t Seen as Canon

Luna and Jones first appeared on screen as characters who were introduced in movies over a decade ago. Jones portrayed Erso, the daughter of Galen Erso, a scientist forced to help create and construct the Galactic Empire’s feared Death Star. Luna played Andor, a character who endured a difficult upbringing before transitioning into smuggling and eventually rising as an unexpected leader within the Rebel Alliance. Luna reprised her role for the series Andor, which unfolds five years prior to the events depicted in Rogue One and progressively aligns with the movie’s timeline.

Despite Luna reappearing in ‘Andor’, the creator previously justified Jones’ absence from the series, stating that if they could find a way to incorporate her without disrupting the entire narrative, Lucasfilm likely wouldn’t have objected. However, Gilroy mentioned several possibilities for connecting Jyn Erso’s character with ‘Andor’, but ultimately concluded that the concept didn’t quite come together satisfactorily.

Andor is available for streaming now on Disney+.
