Recently, it was announced that Milly Alcock’s Supergirl will feature in the upcoming Superman remake. Furthermore, we received casting updates regarding her family members. Notably, David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham were confirmed to portray her parents. While most fans appear enthusiastic about these new additions, a significant number on social media voiced concerns: namely, they questioned the sheer number of characters expected in James Gunn’s Superman film.
It’s clear to me. Trust me on this. I understand the situation. There are numerous characters who are either confirmed or heavily speculated to be part of this upcoming movie, including Clark Kent and Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho. Additionally, we have Clark Kent’s parents and Kara’s recently cast parents. Furthermore, while Jason Momoa’s Lobo is rumored to appear in the Supergirl movie, some believe he could make an appearance here as well. In summary, there’s a lot that’s already been revealed, and given Gunn’s reputation for creating complex universes and enjoying cameos, it’s probable that there’s much more yet to be unveiled.
On one side, some viewers are expressing their discontent on social media about this film appearing overcrowded, or even similar to Justice League. While they’re eager to witness a fresh take on Superman, if the movie has too many elements or is overly focused on expanding the DC Universe, it might detract from the quality of the Superman story itself. Ultimately, our goal should be to ensure that everyone leaves the theater yearning for more Superman adventures. If the film isn’t well-received, this new interpretation of the DC Universe will face a significant challenge, regardless of any hints at future stories or characters.
However, on the contrary, it’s essential that we all take things easy. My colleague Adam Holmes recently penned an article discussing the casting choices, and he pointed out the uncertainty surrounding whether Krumholtz and Beecham will portray Kara’s Kryptonian or Earth parents. Whether they’re appearing in a fleeting flashback or playing a significant role in the plot is uncertain for both them and Kara herself. Although Gunn has mentioned he won’t be producing new origin story films, it’s crucial to recognize that hinting at a character’s past differs from narrating their entire development from infancy to adulthood.
I’d prefer a Superman film that isn’t overflowing with continuous cameos and subtle hints about future events. I don’t want a movie where characters just keep coming in, one after another – neither him nor her. This approach wouldn’t effectively tell Superman’s story, but if the intention is to establish a universe, there’s no harm in incorporating small moments or hints that subtly reference the unique world they inhabit. If Kevin Feige had known he was building a vast Marvel Universe with numerous characters appearing across multiple films, I believe he might have made some adjustments to the early Marvel movies.
As a film enthusiast, James Gunn has definitely won my trust, particularly after the impressive teaser for the upcoming Superman film. Granted, many of his previous works such as Guardians Of The Galaxy and Suicide Squad boast an abundance of characters, but his past projects demonstrate a knack for maintaining the core narrative that he aims to convey. Thus, I’m choosing to stay optimistic, regardless of casting updates, as we eagerly anticipate the day when Superman soars from the movie schedule and onto the big screen.
