Jack Quiad is an actor who has plenty of practice with grisly scenes, particularly since his ongoing role on The Boys, which can be streamed with an Amazon Prime subscription, and his appearances in the Scream franchise. His latest film, Novocaine, is no exception, featuring a plethora of intense violence. A specific scene in this movie left me squirming, and as Quaid shared with TopMob, he had a similar reaction too.
TopMob’s review of the film “Novocaine” highly commended its action, focusing on Quaid’s character Nathan who has a unique condition – he doesn’t experience pain. Although he can be hurt, he remains unaware of injuries as they occur. As demonstrated in the video above, I had a chance to interview the 32-year-old actor about his latest project, and he confided that scenes involving Nathan being tortured, such as having his finger nail ripped off, were particularly distressing for him. In his own words:
Initially, I assumed I’d handle the situation smoothly. However, there’s a particular moment – let me not disclose which scene it’s from – that features my fingernails, and that’s where I drew the line. Frankly, I never thought I’d find one.
Indeed, it’s quite unsettling for me too when fingernails are hurt or tormented in movies. There’s something about fingers and eyes that can send a shiver down my spine. It seems Jack Quaid shares this sentiment, considering his on-set experiences include being stabbed 22 times in Scream, and witnessing characters being torn apart in The Boys.
During our continuing discussion, it turned out that the actor had also suffered a fake hand injury, similar to what was depicted in the 2025 horror film “Companion”. To put it in his own terms:
* He admitted that he experienced a similar fake hand injury as portrayed in the movie “Companion” during our conversation.
* It was later disclosed in our chat that the actor had undergone a similar fake hand injury scene, as seen in the 2025 horror film “Companion”.
* The actor shared with us that he had gone through a similar fake hand injury for the 2025 horror movie “Companion” during our conversation.
On Companion, an incident occurred where I accidentally slammed my hand against a door. As for this situation, it seems to have something connected with my fingernails. It’s safe to say that whenever it involves my hands, I find myself feeling a bit queasy… It appears that my hands are particularly sensitive to me. I never expected this aspect of myself to be so significant.
To put it simply, it’s not surprising that Quaid endures such distress in the movie “Novocaine”. While nail-related scenes might be particularly unsettling, so are many hand injuries depicted on screen. Regrettably, Quaid experiences numerous instances of hand trauma throughout the film, including a scene involving a deep fryer and another with a knife, as hinted in the trailer of “Novocaine”.

From my perspective, reactions towards “Novocaine” have been varied, with some critics expressing a desire for the character lacking pain sensation to be more fully explored. It will be intriguing to see how it fares in cinemas. For me, I found the blend of violence and humor in this production truly captivating when I watched it on the big screen, making it one of my top picks from the 2025 movie lineup thus far.
