As a seasoned gamer and avid fan of action-packed movies, I must say I’m thrilled about the upcoming release of “Novocaine” starring Jack Quaid. The trailer alone has sparked my curiosity, and getting insights from directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen only amplifies my anticipation.
For multiple seasons over on Amazon Prime Video, Jack Quaid has helped to wage a war against “Supes” as a member of the gritty anti-hero establishment, The Boys. When Quaid started off playing Hughie Campbell, he was a regular guy absent of powers, though a lot has changed as the cast heads into The Boys Season 5. And something is about to change for Quaid… at least, on the big screen. The actor is poised to lead a brand new action comedy called Novocaine, directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen. And in the movie, he will play a man blessed (or cursed) with a rare genetic disorder that prevents him from feeling any pain whatsoever. The trailer for the film just dropped, and we got the chance to break it down with Berk and Olsen, so dig into both:
After watching the trailer for Novocaine, I found myself with some queries. Fortunately, directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen provided clarification. Here’s what they shared with TopMob:
How much pain is too much pain?
One significant issue that emerged for Berk and Olsen while working on the story about a protagonist who lacks the ability to feel pain became evident: how to portray a character like Jack Quaid’s hero, who remains unfazed by injury. In the preview, you can observe this clearly as he is stabbed, shot, or submerged in hot oil – yet he persists without reacting.
Since the filmmakers looked up to the ordinary-yet-heroic figure Bruce Willis for inspiration, they were worried that incorporating such a powerful character in their movie “Novocaine” might lessen the element of surprise or tension. This is what they shared with TopMob.
During the production, we needed to maintain a record of every injury inflicted on our character, ensuring it was plausible and didn’t exceed the bounds of physical survival. It was crucial to avoid portraying damage so extreme that the audience might doubt the character could still be alive after such injuries. This part of the process was fascinating, as we collaborated with our special effects and prosthetics teams to create a detailed map of the body, complete with a chronology of 139 minor cuts, wounds, and other marks. We also carefully tracked every impact, asking ourselves questions like, “Would such a hit knock out a human, even one who is exceptionally tough?” This was important because the scenes didn’t involve actual knockouts!
It seems like an absolutely thrilling task you’re proposing. Just to eliminate any confusion, given that the trailer for Novocaine mentions Wolverine, I was wondering if Jack Quaid has healing abilities in this forthcoming 2025 movie. The directors have confirmed to me that he does possess such powers.
No, that element doesn’t fit this storyline. What makes the film exciting is watching the protagonist’s condition worsen after each fight since all events occur within a day. Consequently, there’s no time for injuries to heal. It’s like a thrilling countdown in an action movie.
I’m really looking forward to the upcoming film “Novocaine” because it features Amber Midthunder, who made a strong impression in the terrific prequel of “Predator“, “Prey“. Midthunder is expected to rise even higher as an actress with this movie, and the directors of “Novocaine” have hinted that we’ll get to see fresh aspects of her acting talent. So, we’ll simply have to wait until March 14 to find out what this film has in store for us.
