Now That Agatha All Along Officially Namedropped Mephisto, I'm Thinking Back To When We Asked The EPs About The Marvel Villain's Casting

As a long-time Marvel fan, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns in the ever-evolving MCU. The introduction of Mephisto in Agatha All Along has been a rollercoaster ride that’s had me on the edge of my seat since WandaVision ended.

Warning! If you haven’t seen the third episode of Agatha All Along, there are spoilers ahead. However, don’t worry, no enchantments will be cast on you.

Since the conclusion of “WandaVision” in 2021, one intriguing question that arose from that chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe concerned the possibility of the villainous Mephisto appearing in future Marvel TV series, with numerous speculative theories being put forth. The title character’s horror-infused spinoff has now officially acknowledged Mephisto’s existence within the universe, even though he didn’t make an appearance by the end of Episode 3.

Reflecting on Sasheer Zamata’s character Jennifer Kale casually mentioning the Lord of Evil in “Through Many Miles / Of Tricks and Trials,” I found myself reminiscing about TopMob’s Sean O’Connell posing a question to showrunner Jac Schaeffer and executive producer Mary Livanos regarding the casting for Mephisto, with differing responses.

Showrunner Jac Schaeffer’s Quip

Jac Schaeffer, who oversaw WandaVision, likely has all the inside knowledge about Mephisto’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), despite not being able to shout it from every rooftop in Westview. When we inquired about the casting for the demon, Schaeffer responded with a chuckle, but offered an intriguing, though possibly misleading, response instead.

[Laughs.] Uhhh, Gene Kelly. [Laughs.]

It’s plausible that the idea of Gene Kelly playing Mephisto was proposed due to the fact that he is no longer alive – having passed away in 1996 at the age of 83. However, it might have been sparked by screenwriter Jac Schaeffer recently rewatching “An American in Paris” or one of Kelly’s other famous films. Regardless of its feasibility, it’s an engaging thought: Could we imagine a Mephisto who not only brings chaos, but also longs to dance under the rain and sing?

EP Mary Livanos’ Tease

Contrarily, Executive Producer Mary Livanos, known for her role in shows like WandaVision and other MCU productions, opted to keep things cryptic when we questioned her on the Mephisto casting. In her own words:

[Chuckles.] It’s fascinating to see the array of fan theories emerging from WandaVision! As for Mephisto, while I suspect there are schemes afoot within the Marvel Universe concerning him, I’m afraid I can only share so much on the matter at this time.

In the new series, Agatha All Along, it’s clear that those involved in Wanda and Vision’s story from the initial Disney+ MCU series are well aware of the extensive fan discussions centered around Mephisto. (Director Matt Shakman clarified that Mephisto was never a consideration for WandaVision.) Therefore, Livanos understands that even a casual mention like Jen’s will be closely scrutinized under a magnifying glass.

Although such a playful response might lead to various speculations, it remains uncertain if Agatha will function as a bridge prior to Mephisto’s anticipated appearance in Ironheart, a series yet to premiere and featuring Sasha Baron Cohen in an unspecified role that many suspect could be the demon character.

How Agatha All Along Finally Referenced Mephisto

In the third episode of Agatha All Along‘s nine-episode run, the story primarily focused on the main characters grappling with being poisoned by whatever causes events on the Witches’ Road. While Jen and Teen were searching for a cure, a witch skilled in potions confided in Joe Locke’s enigmatic character that Agatha (it was said) had given up her son Nicholas in exchange for the Darkhold. This revelation was intended to sow seeds of doubt within the younger character.

Continuing with the portrayal of Zamata’s character, this fueled further speculation, some of which isn’t directly connected to Mephisto.

In the realm of speculation and mystery, it’s said no one truly knows his fate. Some whisper he may have perished, while others suggest he could be a supernatural entity, perhaps even a demon or an emissary of Mephisto. Yet, when you’ve got Agatha Harkness as your mom, such intrigue seems almost expected, doesn’t it?

Some theories about Teen proposed that he could be playing a memory-affected version of Agatha’s son Nicholas Scratch, and shots of Locke holding Agatha’s pet rabbit seemed to be nodding in that direction, if only to say “We know what you’re thinking, and you’re wrong.” But will we ever see actual representations of Nicholas Scratch or Mephisto in the MCU? We’ll have to keep watching.

Every Wednesday night at 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time, fans with a Disney+ subscription can catch the latest episodes of “Agatha All Along” streaming online.
