Now That Fox Renewed Doc For A Much Bigger Season 2, I’m Rethinking What The Stars Said Is ‘Fresh’ About Their Love Triangle

2025 saw Fox kick off its TV schedule impressively, as the debut of new medical drama “Doc” shattered ratings records upon its January premiere. This is the network’s first medical drama since the finale of “The Resident” in 2023. Fans won’t have to wait until the end of Season 1 for positive updates about the show’s future, given its unexpected twist involving amnesia. The optimistic news from Fox regarding the series brings to mind what Molly Parker, Omar Metwally, and Jon Ecker shared with TopMob earlier this year about their characters’ complex love triangle.

Doc Renewed For Season 2

Before the second last episode of Season 1, Fox announced that they have renewed the show Doc. This means that the medical drama will return following the completion of its initial ten episodes, and not just that, it has received a larger order for Season 2. The viewers can expect a full TV season of 22 episodes next time around, which is likely to return during the fall of the 2025-2026 television season.

As stated by Michael Thorn, President of FOX Television Network, it was a straightforward choice to renew the series Doc so early, attributing the decision to an “outstanding team,” Sony as valued partners, and a superb cast headed by the gifted Molly Parker. This announcement follows close on the heels of 9-1-1: Lone Star, which has been FOX’s most popular show; could Doc be in line to take over that position?

Without a doubt, the debut episode made quite an impact on the ratings! With over 16 million viewers across all platforms (including replays) by February 19th, it marked a staggering 647% increase compared to the initial ratings for the first live broadcast. This impressive feat earned it the title of Fox’s most-watched premiere in five years, surpassing the record set by 9-1-1: Lone Star. Remarkably, Doc is one of only two new broadcast series that experienced growth in both the 18-49 age demographic and total viewers from Week 1 to Week 2, as announced by Fox.

Despite the Season 1 finale not airing until March 18, is it truly unexpected that Fox places such confidence in the show Doc, to the point of commissioning a significantly larger second season? (You can catch up on all the episodes aired so far with a Hulu subscription.)

The Stars’ Thoughts On The Love Triangle

From the get-go, Doc’s love triangle on television has been quite unorthodox, with no clear villain emerging as the messiness ensued following Amy’s (Molly Parker from Deadwood) memory loss. In a clandestine relationship with Jake (Jon Ecker from Queen of the South) post-divorce from her husband Michael (Omar Metwally, known for his role in Big Sky), Amy’s TBI led her to forget her affection for Jake, causing her to believe she was still married to him despite Michael’s remarriage. To complicate matters further, Michael had already tied the knot again.

The storyline has certainly become more complex since the love triangle (or what seems to be one) was introduced in the first episode, and it remains to be seen if it will be resolved or extended into a longer second season through the next two episodes. It appears that some resolution is needed at this point, but the intricacies of the three-person dynamic have been crucial to the show up until now.

During my conversation with the “Doc” cast at SCAD TVfest in Atlanta, it was appropriate that Parker, Metwally, and Ecker stood together on the red carpet. I sought their thoughts on a triangle involving three individuals having varying degrees of knowledge about their connections, and Parker shared his perspective by saying:

In an intriguing twist, I find myself observing a situation where one participant remains unaware that she’s caught in a love triangle. [Smiles] This element of surprise adds an engaging layer to the scenario. In traditional love triangles, tension arises from internal conflict. However, in this unique case, the dynamic deviates from the norm.

There’s a lot of disagreement among Jake, Amy, and Michael, but it wasn’t anyone’s fault specifically; instead, it was the unfortunate timing of Amy’s car accident leading to traumatic brain injury (TBI) and amnesia that caused the discord. Since then, fans are left to form their own opinions about their subsequent actions, as expressed by Omar Metwally in his analysis.

On a broader scale, that aspect captivates the audience, and it does. As individual performers, we often delve deeper into the micro details: what our characters experience, their viewpoint, their desires, ours too – what are they, what do we want? For us, it’s equally thrilling to see how all these pieces coalesce when we observe the larger picture unfold.

By the time the trio attended SCAD TVfest in February, Season 1 of “Doc” had already been filmed, sparing them from revealing spoilers before the series ended. Moreover, they were unaware at that point that they would be granted a second season consisting of 22 episodes. Jon Ecker shared his perspective on the intriguing love triangle and its unique aspects.

The first half is a bit strange for both Jake and Michael, but things shift slightly in the second part. Throughout this time, we’re both focusing on her mental health and recovery. In doing so, we’ve set aside our personal feelings towards her to prioritize her emotional wellbeing. It’s an intriguing predicament, indeed.

Will the intriguing dynamic among these three characters persist into the next season? Given the complexities involved in this love triangle, it appears that it may not be fully resolved by the end of Season 1, even with everything going perfectly for the characters. Their luck hasn’t been particularly good thus far, and there are other issues at play beyond just romantic entanglements.

Continue tuning into Fox every Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET for the latest episodes of Doc Season 1, and relax knowing it won’t be cancelled. I hope they’ll team up Doc Season 2 with Murder in a Small Town Season 2, following the renewal of Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk’s series too. For now, let’s just be patient and find out.
