As a cinephile with a penchant for international cinema, I couldn’t be more thrilled about Pedro Almodóvar’s latest masterpiece, “The Room Next Door,” premiering at the 2024 New York Film Festival! Having followed Almodóvar’s career since his early days, it’s akin to witnessing an old friend’s triumph, especially with this being his first English-language feature.
Pedro Almodóvar’s movie titled “The Room Next Door” featuring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton is set to make its American debut as the main feature at the 2024 New York Film Festival on October 4th.
The movie, based on Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through,” is Almodóvar’s debut English-language film. It tells the story of Ingrid (Moore) and Martha (Swinton), a well-known writer and an old friend who reconnect after many years apart. As they reminisce about their past, share stories, art, and cinema, Martha asks something that challenges their renewed relationship.
“Almodóvar expressed his joy that ‘The Room Next Door’ would headline the New York Film Festival. For years, this festival has served as a connection between him and New York viewers, which is why it seemed fitting for the characters to watch a movie at Alice Tully Hall in one of the film’s scenes. Filming there, a place filled with meaningful memories for him, was emotional, and he looks forward to continuing those cherished moments in the near future.”
Dennis Lim, artistic director of NYFF, remarked, “Pedro Almodóvar is scarcely more linked with the New York Film Festival than any other filmmaker, and it’s an absolute joy to feature his inaugural English-language film as our main selection this year. The Room Next Door showcases an artist at the pinnacle of his abilities: a thoughtful, superbly acted, heartbreakingly beautiful movie that seems tailor-made for our current times.”
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that the film “The Room Next Door,” distributed by Sony Pictures Classics, marks Pedro Almodóvar’s 15th selection at the New York Film Festival. Incredibly, nine of his previous festival films have been given gala presentations, a testament to his enduring influence. Among these esteemed works are classics like “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” “All About My Mother,” and “Bad Education.” Additionally, there’s “Volver,” “Live Flesh,” “Talk to Her,” “Broken Embraces,” “Parallel Mothers,” “The Flower of My Secret,” “The Skin I Live In,” “Julieta,” “Pain and Glory,” “The Human Voice,” and even “Strange Way of Life.” It’s a privilege to witness such a prolific filmmaker’s ongoing contributions to the cinematic world.
The 62nd New York Film Festival is set to run from Sept. 27-Oct. 13.
