Oblivion Remaster Spellcrafting Is as Broken as It Is Brilliant

In Oblivion Remastered, Spellcrafting has struck a chord with many long-time players, but it’s also been causing quite a few headaches among them.

The game allows players to create unique spells by combining various elements, pushing the game’s magic system to its limits in numerous directions. However, despite the freedom it offers, the system is fraught with technical issues, user interface flaws, and unexpected restrictions that give the impression of a makeshift setup held together by duct tape and a dash of nostalgia.

To begin with the good points: spellcrafting is amazing when it functions effectively. The mechanism allows you to combine several effects within a single cast, enabling you to create an extravagant combination such as Fortify Speed, Health Regeneration, and Invisibility, which essentially turns your character into an invincible entity.

Blend abilities such as Regenerative Health, Immobilization, and Vulnerability to Spells, and you’ve crafted a unique annihilation spell capable of eliminating entire groups of foes. It’s not hard to understand why players remain captivated by the system—it’s rare to find mechanics in contemporary RPGs that offer this level of control without micromanagement.

When you start focusing on designing spells, you’ll encounter numerous hurdles. One of the most frequent troubleshooting topics revolves around Fortify and Drain effects. For instance, when you attempt to cast a Fortify Acrobatics spell, the interface may restrict you from selecting it, leaving you stuck with Armorer despite your efforts to change it. In some cases, simply quitting and restarting the game won’t resolve the issue.

Players using Xbox, PlayStation, or PC have been swapping solutions because the issue with getting altars to function properly is so common across platforms. Solutions can be found everywhere, but they don’t consistently work for everyone as the bug seems to have a will of its own. Additionally, there are other odd inconsistencies that persist. For instance, once your Alteration skill reaches maximum level, feather spells tend to malfunction.

This way, the text is easier to read and understand, while still maintaining the original meaning.

Occasionally, certain items don’t increase your carrying capacity and may even eliminate any additional weight, nullifying new effects. This isn’t a bug but rather a complex result of the hidden weight calculation system. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t provide an explanation for this, so players often discover it through trial and error. In other words, spellcrafting in Oblivion Remastered remains as ingenious as before—yet equally prone to confusion.

This game offers almost endless creative possibilities for players, but they must be prepared to monitor the system closely and follow numerous steps to ensure it works correctly. For those who persevere, the payoff is substantial. However, it’s undeniable that the system requires significant improvement. In its current state, creating spells feels like performing real-life magic: potent, erratic, and slightly troublesome.
