Summary
- Lifelong Skyrim players are finally realising how good Oblivion is because of Oblivion Remastered.
- People experiencing Oblivion for the first time are surprised by how alive Cyrodiil feels.
- Oblivion Remastered is a subversion of modern gaming trends, and it works in its favour.
The Elder Scrolls franchise doesn’t typically have a standout “best” game. While Skyrim is indisputably the most popular entry in terms of sales, there’s a significant group of fans who argue that Oblivion, Morrowind, or even Daggerfall are the superior titles within the series.
All these games have their own merits and distinct qualities, making it possible to argue that any one of them is the finest in The Elder Scrolls series. However, Adventures: Redguard tends to be less favored by many, Todd.
Upon the unexpected launch of Oblivion Remastered, the fourth installment in the series has found itself back in the limelight once more. Being someone who spent their childhood gaming with Oblivion, I’ve always found its semi-unintentional quirks to be particularly appealing, especially in contrast to the more somber atmosphere of Skyrim. Interestingly, it seems that many other fans share this sentiment as well.
The Weird and Wacky World of Cyrodiil
In a Reddit post by Successful_Risk1, the user playfully suggests that it’s only now becoming apparent to everyone that Oblivion surpasses Skyrim in quality all along. Predictably, the comments section is filled with people explaining why they believe Oblivion to be superior to Skyrim as a game.
Desertterminator wrote: “Upon entering the first tavern found past the Elven ruins, I stumbled upon a lively scene where every NPC seemed to be engaged in heated conversations all at once, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
In the world of Oblivion, the behavior of non-player characters might seem peculiar to some, but there’s no denying they infuse Cyrodiil with a unique vitality rarely found in contemporary RPGs. It’s their flaws that make Oblivion engaging and entertaining to explore.

One reason why Oblivion Remastered appeals to contemporary gamers, who have grown accustomed to high-quality games with more lifelike characters, is because it cleverly subverts modern game design while boasting stunning visuals. This combination perfectly recaptures the sensation that original Oblivion players experienced nineteen years ago.
In ADackOnJaniels’s view, the one primary aspect that he thinks diminishes Skyrim compared to Oblivion is the lack of depth in NPC interactions and schedules. While we may have different opinions on game design, locations, and quest writing, he feels that Oblivion was more engaging because of its lively NPC behavior, which received a reduction in Skyrim.
There’s no question that Skyrim is an incredible game, and it brings me joy to see Oblivion getting attention again.
