Obscure Sega Game Eternal Champions Is Getting a Big-Budget Movie

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a penchant for deciphering the intricacies of film production, I find myself quite intrigued by the latest venture from Skydance Productions – the live-action adaptation of the 90s Sega video game, Eternal Champions.

The company responsible for “Top Gun: Maverick” is planning its next film project by delving into the ’90s era. As per a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Derek Connolly has been brought on board to write the script for a live-action version of the Sega video game “Eternal Champions.” Currently, there’s no set timeline or studio for this film production. Yet, with Paramount Global’s recent agreement to merge with Skydance, they seem like the prime candidate for the release of this movie based on the video game.

Born in Miami and now 48 years old, this individual has penned screenplays for several high-profile Hollywood franchises. He is particularly recognized for writing the entire Jurassic World trilogy that culminated with last year’s Jurassic World: Dominion. Interestingly, two of these films were helmed by his close associate and frequent partner, Colin Trevorrow. Despite the trilogy’s impressive box office performance, Connolly received a Razzie Award nomination for Worst Screenplay for Dominion.

Besides penning the screenplay for the 2017 film “Kong: Skull Island,” a part of the Monsterverse series, and crafting the screen story for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019, initially intended to be directed by Trevorrow but ended up not happening due to creative disagreements, Connolly’s major break was in writing the script for the 2013 film “Safety Not Guaranteed.” More recently, he has agreed to write the screenplay for the upcoming crossover movie featuring both Transformers and G.I. Joe characters, starring Chris Hemsworth.

Previously, Connolly has been involved in bringing video game stories to the big screen, with his credits including the script for 2019’s Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. Since 2017, he has also been assigned to write the screenplay for Metal Gear Solid, a live-action adaptation of the action-stealth game. The movie was postponed due to the pandemic but is still in development, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts directing and Oscar Isaac starring as Snake. Additionally, Connolly is working on a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, which will be directed by Wes Ball, who recently worked on Planet of the Apes: Kingdom.

It’s surprising that Eternal Champions, initially launched in 1993 for Sega Genesis, would be considered for a movie adaptation given its relatively modest success compared to other popular fighting games of the era like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and Double Dragon. Despite being initially successful and spawning sequels and spin-offs, it failed to reach the same level of fame as its competitors. Nevertheless, it has developed a dedicated fanbase, earning a sort of cult following among hardcore gamers.

As a lifelong fan of fantasy stories and epic battles, I am thrilled at the prospect of this game making its way to the big screen. With my extensive background in mythology and love for time-travel tales, I can imagine the captivating storyline of the Eternal Champion journeying through different eras to find worthy fighters. The idea of giving these heroes a second chance to fulfill their destiny is nothing short of inspiring. I’ve always believed that every life has a purpose, and this game seems to encapsulate that belief perfectly. Sign me up for the adventure of a lifetime!
