‘Oh My God, Yes!’ Ben Schwartz Tells Us What He Wants For Sonic 4, And It Makes Me Even More Excited

As a longtime cinephile with a soft spot for animated films and video game adaptations, I must say that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been a delightful surprise this year. Having grown up playing the original Sega games, I’ve witnessed the evolution of our favorite blue blur on screen, and it’s been an emotional journey, to say the least.

The following contains SPOILERS for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, so beware of what you read from here!

The lineup for movies in 2024 is packed with fresh offerings, and among them, one of the most anticipated so far is “Sonic the Hedgehog 3“. Praised by TopMob in its Sonic 3 review, and outperforming Mufasa: The Lion King at the box office by leaps and bounds, it was merely a question of time before a fourth “Sonic” film was greenlit. With its release just underway, we now have an idea of when it will be shown – and Ben Schwartz has shared his expectations for the next installment.

If you haven’t caught wind of it yet, Variety has confirmed that production on “Sonic the Hedgehog 4” is underway, targeting a launch in spring 2027. With the official announcement of the fourth movie, I couldn’t help but wonder what Ben Schwartz, the delightful voice behind Sonic, would like to see in this upcoming film and if he’d be interested in maintaining the collaborative spirit that’s been developing over the last two movies – his response was a hearty “yes” with plenty of excitement!

It’s clear that this film’s ending hints at some incredibly exciting possibilities for our series! I can hardly contain my enthusiasm for exploring those storylines further. The creators have devised a way to ensure everyone gets their moment, and it seems we’ll be collaborating as a team – me, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. With Knuckles’ strength, Sonic’s speed, Tails’ flight and gadgetry, and learning to work together, this team promises to be unstoppable!

In the finale of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a hint was dropped about the possible inclusion of Amy Rose, a character beloved by fans, in the upcoming Sonic movie. This would expand the team of super-powered characters even further. Director Jeff Fowler expressed his confidence in this team dynamic, drawing inspiration from successful team films that capitalize on distinct personalities, ultimately combining to create a stronger force. He referenced numerous popular Marvel movies as examples.

Reflecting on the number of remarkable teams such as the Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers, Fantastic Four, or X-Men, one could strategize effectively. By ensuring each member gets their spotlight, and subsequently joining forces, they can amplify their power, similar to how Voltron combines to become stronger.

It’s clear that the Sonic the Hedgehog series has been emphasizing team dynamics more and more recently. Though Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduced us to Shadow, the ending of the movie seemed to suggest that we might not see him again in the film series as he appeared to have sacrificed himself alongside Dr. Robotnik to save Earth. However, it turns out that Shadow survived, which means he could potentially reappear, correct?

Regarding the post-credits scene, I’m intrigued about what could transpire if Amy Rose joins this squad. Could she possibly receive a spinoff in the same vein as Knuckles, or will she have her own moment in Sonic the Hedgehog 4? Moreover, how will she contribute to the team dynamic that Ben Schwartz is eager to broaden?

Schwartz’s enthusiasm really gets me pumped up! I can hardly wait to see her even sooner in 2027. Could we possibly speed things up by skipping the 2025 movie schedule and moving ahead two years instead? That sounds like a blast! Regardless, Schwartz’s determination to carry on this team for the next Sonic installment is undeniable, and I, for one, will be there – and I hope Amy Rose joins us as well.
