As a fan, I have always been captivated by the enchanting performances of Olivia Hussey, particularly her mesmerizing portrayal of Juliet Capulet in Franco Zeffirelli’s iconic adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Her talent was evident from an early age, as demonstrated by her stunning debut at just 16 years old.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, I find myself bidding farewell at 73, the one who once brought Romeo and Juliet’s tragic love story to life on the silver screen under Franco Zeffirelli’s masterful direction in 1968. Yes, that’s me – Olivia Hussey. This chapter has come to a close now, but my memories of our shared journey will forever linger in the hearts of those who admired our tale.
The Argentine actress Olivia passed away at home, enveloped by those dear to her, as stated in a post on her official Instagram. A beacon of warmth, insight, and genuine compassion, Olivia left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to cross paths with her.
At sixteen, Hussey played opposite Leonard Whiting as Romeo in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” which was jointly penned by Zeffirelli. The film, produced by Paramount, was not only nominated for the prestigious Best Picture Oscar but also for three other Academy Awards. Additionally, she was awarded a David di Donatello prize and a Golden Globe for her exceptional performance.
Her 1966 London performance in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” alongside Vanessa Redgrave opened the door for her, leading her to the attention of Zeffirelli.
Additionally, Hussey collaborated with an Italian movie director, portraying Mary in the 1977 television series titled “Jesus of Nazareth.” Furthermore, she played the character Rosalie Otterbourne, who was sulky and the daughter of Angela Lansbury’s character, in the 1978 film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel “Death on the Nile,” which was directed by John Guillermin.
In the chilling 1974 film “Black Christmas,” I found myself in the shoes of a character named Jess Bradford, a student who experienced sheer terror within the walls of a sorority house. This spine-tingling slasher horror masterpiece was masterfully directed by Bob Clark right here in Canada.
Lately, she has been lending her voice to Star Wars video games such as Star Wars: Rogue Squadron from 1998, Star Wars: Force Commander in 2000, and Star Wars: The Old Republic in 2011.
Among those who carry on my legacy are my beloved husband of 35 years, David Glen Eisley; my treasured sons, Alexander, Max, and India; as well as my precious grandson, Greyson.
Apart from being wedded to Dean Paul Martin, who is the offspring of renowned entertainer Dean Martin, from 1971 up till their divorce in 1978, she was also married to Japanese actor-writer Akira Fuse, a union that lasted from 1980 until their separation in 1989.
