Olivia Munn Claims a ‘Newsroom’ Director Tried to “Ruin” Her “Chances of Getting” More Roles

Olivia Munn is opening up about what she endured by a director on the series The Newsroom.

Hey folks, so I recently spilled some tea on the Armchair Expert podcast about my time working on that HBO show created by Aaron Sorkin.

In an episode, my character was romantically involved with Tom Sadoski’s character and developing feelings for him. However, the director persistently wanted me to portray this relationship solely from my character’s perspective. He would suggest things like, ‘Could you gaze at him and smile?’ To which I responded, ‘But she has other things to do.’ Or, ‘Could you pause and cuddle with him or flirt with him?’ Or, ‘Can you give him a kiss?’ And I replied, ‘This is during work.’

Munn chose not to reveal the person’s identity. Later, she discovered that the director had expressed unfavorable opinions about their collaboration to other movie professionals who might have considered hiring her in the future.

I was moments away from landing a movie role when my manager called to inform me, ‘Hey, it’s confirmed you’ll get the part. However, there seems to be another director involved who remembers an instance where you were frequently late and quite confrontational on ‘The Newsroom’.’

The Hollywood Reporter reached out to HBO for comment.

For about seven minutes, I resided close by. Consequently, punctuality was never an issue. As soon as I realized who he was, it became clear that he was trying to undermine me. I made sure to inform my representatives, ‘Please communicate this to the directors.’ Despite our contrasting methods for portraying roles, he attempted to sabotage my future opportunities. However, I managed to secure the role. Yet, I will forever remember this incident due to his attempts to harm my prospects.
