As a long-time follower of political journalism, I find myself both disheartened and intrigued by the recent developments involving Olivia Nuzzi and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. While her impressive career trajectory, from an intern to a respected correspondent, is indeed commendable, the allegations of a romantic relationship with a former subject while covering the 2024 campaign are troubling.
It’s reported that New York Magazine temporarily suspended their Washington correspondent, Olivia Nuzzi, following accusations of her being romantically involved with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
In a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday, it was admitted that our Washington Correspondent, Olivia Nuzzi, had breached our conflict-of-interest and disclosure guidelines. This occurred when she became involved in a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign, while she was simultaneously reporting on that same campaign for us. This is against the magazine’s policies.
If the magazine had known about this personal connection, she wouldn’t have been involved in covering the presidential campaign any longer. A review of her previously published articles didn’t find any mistakes or signs of bias. At present, she is on a temporary break from the magazine, and they are carrying out an extensive independent investigation. We apologize for damaging the trust our readers placed in us.
It’s been reported by Oliver Darcy from Status, based on sources knowledgeable about the situation, that Amy Nuzzi did not openly disclose her alleged romantic involvement with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and this information was only recently brought to the attention of New York Magazine. The relationship is said to have begun around the turn of the year, following Amy Nuzzi’s November 2023 profile on Kennedy, the former presidential candidate.
Nuzzi is well-known as a prodigious political journalist. She abandoned her studies at Fordham University to focus on politics reporting for The Daily Beast. Previously, in 2013, Nuzzi gained attention when she wrote insider accounts about her time as an intern during Anthony Weiner’s mayoral campaign, which led to colorful comments from the campaign’s communications director to Talking Points Memo. During Donald Trump’s presidency, Nuzzi became recognized for her in-depth reporting and sources within the Trump administration. In the wake of the assassination attempt against Trump in July, Trump permitted Nuzzi to examine his injured ear, which served as the main point in a feature article she wrote for New York Magazine.
Last month, Kennedy halted his third-party bid for president and endorsed Trump. He has been married to actress Cheryl Hines since 2014.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Nuzzi and Kennedy for comments.
