On Supernatural's Series Finale Anniversary, I Flashed Back To The 300th Episode Red Carpet And One EP's Comments About Fans And Continuity

As a die-hard Supernatural fan who’s seen every episode a dozen times (or more), I can confidently say that four years have gone by too quickly since the series finale aired. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long since we bid farewell to Sam, Dean, and the rest of the Winchester family.

Hard to believe, but it’s been four years since the controversial series finale of “Supernatural” aired on November 19, 2020. The final season was certainly unorthodox; production had to halt with only two episodes left to shoot when COVID-related shutdowns began in March 2020, and the finale had to be trimmed due to restrictions. In its swan song on The CW, both main characters met their untimely end in the afterlife – Dean (Jensen Ackles) passed away years before Sam (Jared Padalecki) would.

Over the years since then, I’ve had mixed feelings about the final episode, but its fourth anniversary didn’t prompt me to reminisce about Dean’s death by rebar or Jared Padalecki’s aging makeup. Instead, for some reason, it took me back to when I walked the red carpet for the 300th episode celebration at the end of 2018 and interacted with members of the Supernatural team before their party began. (If you can’t remember what I’m referring to, you might want to watch the episode again, which is available on Netflix.)

As a devoted fan, I had the privilege of chatting with Jared Padalecki who shared his surprise that ‘Supernatural’ would endure long enough to reach its impressive milestone of 300 episodes. Brad Buckner, the executive producer, also enlightened me about how the episode titled “Lebanon” would deviate from other significant installments like the musical 200th episode named “Fan Fiction.

On our team, we have individuals who are knowledgeable about various aspects. For instance, if I draft something, someone might point out, ‘We can’t present it that way, as the exact opposite was depicted in Episode 2 of Season 6.’ If you’re determined to proceed, you’ll need to devise a valid explanation. Emotion doesn’t play much of a role here.

In the TV show Supernatural, it became notorious for frequently eliminating major characters only to bring them back again soon after, with Misha Collins’ character Castiel often being the victim. Interestingly, he managed to choose his most dramatic death scene, which occurred in 2017; however, there were still another resurrection and demise for Castiel before the series ended! Despite not holding the record for the most deaths and resurrections within the show, Castiel’s heroic exit to save the man he cared for was undeniably more grandiose than Dean’s departure using a metal rod.

Speaking with the Executive Producer on the red carpet during the 300th episode (as seen above), it was almost two more years until the finale, yet! The show “Supernatural” had to make exceptions in its rules to bring together the Winchester family, consisting of both John and Mary, for Season 14. After the episode titled “Lebanon,” I believed that “Supernatural” still held some life, and I sought Eugenie Ross-Leming’s opinion on what kept viewers hooked for so many years. In response, she shared her thoughts on what kept people watching “Supernatural” for such a long time.

Although I’d love to express that the writing, while crucial, is only part of the equation; the characters themselves are tailored to please fans, meeting their expectations and preferences. By consistently presenting challenging situations for these characters, we provide opportunities for them to shine. Fans often possess a deeper understanding of the characters’ histories than even us creators do. They recall details and events that enrich our own understanding.

As a dedicated gamer, I can attest to the fact that even though I’m not one of the hardcore fans, I’ve still managed to recall an impressive amount of trivia about Supernatural. It seems that fans of this show have an uncanny knack for remembering details – whether it’s a good thing or not, it’s definitely true! Fans remember, and remember well.

Before Lebanon aired, the 300th episode of Supernatural was celebrated with a red carpet event and party in Vancouver. At that time, I hadn’t watched it yet. Reflecting on my interviews from that day, one comment by Executive Producer Brad Buckner about the milestone is particularly intriguing when viewed in light of how the series finale concluded about two years later:

This episode deviates from many of our reference shows, which typically feature meta or bizarrely eccentric and humorous installments. If we persistently stick with such themes, it may seem like the show is constantly reinventing itself. Over time, there comes a point where one must consistently outdo oneself in a particular manner.

In summary, it was wonderful to be reminded of my conversation with the Supernatural team during their four-year anniversary finale. Regardless of personal feelings about how the series ended for Sam, Dean, and Castiel, there’s no denying that it was an exhilarating journey. Few shows can claim to have reached 300 episodes and continued for another 27.

As a gamer, I’d say if you’re hankering for another spin in the world of “Lebanon,” be it the finale or any of the epic 327 episodes that spanned an incredible fifteen seasons from September 2005 to November 2020, way before the TV schedules of 2024 and 2025 were even thought of, you can now stream the entire series on Netflix!
