Although Robert Smith from The Cure may not have been a fan of Morrissey from The Smiths on a personal level, he did appreciate the music that his counterpart produced. It’s common for people to dislike someone personally but still admire their professional accomplishments, as these are often separate matters.
Smith has consistently held firm opinions about music, as expected. Given his leadership of one of the more impactful rock bands from the past four decades, it’s no wonder their high-quality albums keep coming. Among the top records of 2024, their latest album, Songs of a Lost World, certainly stands out.
Moreover, you can expect the band to unveil their remix album based on their 2024 project on June 13th. This upcoming release is named Remixed Echoes from a Forgotten Realm.
The Cure’s Robert Smith greatly disliked this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee
Interestingly enough, there is one well-known band from the ’80s that Smith doesn’t appreciate – Duran Duran. For some reason, Duran Duran rubs Smith the wrong way, despite having no issues with any members of the group. Not everyone agrees with Smith, as Duran Duran was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
In an interview Smith conducted with the Guardian in 2018, it was stated that Duran Duran represented everything the Cure found repugnant. Rather than producing gothic records with a glamorous sheen, as their appearance might suggest at times, the Cure preferred to create rougher albums. Instead of giving their songs a polished finish, they deliberately made them sound more raw and gritty.
The groundbreaking album by the band, titled “Pornography,” was intentionally made to sound muddy and gloomy, mirroring the somber tone of its songs. To polish it up with an ’80s gloss in today’s context would appear absurd.
Back in the day, when I first heard Duran Duran, they embodied everything we despised. The glitzy ’80s, that materialistic era, was a stark contrast to our world. They symbolized the flashy spectacle we were struggling against.
The vocalist of The Cure expressed regret for not appreciating Simon Le Bon and his fellow band members, mentioning that it’s unfortunate since they admired them greatly and often attended their concerts.
Sure thing! It’s possible to have differing musical tastes, like Smith not liking Morrissey or The Smiths, yet still being able to get along with the people involved. For instance, Smith may have been friendly with Le Bon and his group, but he wasn’t fond of their music.
This version keeps the main ideas intact while using simpler language and a more conversational tone.
