One Deadpool And Wolverine Easter Egg Just Got Debunked, And Even Director Shawn Levy Thought It Was Legit

As a long-time Marvel fan and someone who has spent countless hours poring over every frame of every Marvel movie, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment at the revelation that the ship in Deadpool & Wolverine isn’t actually a nod to Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World. I remember vividly watching the EW interview where Shawn Levy confirmed my suspicions, only for him to later backtrack on his statement. It’s like being told there’s dessert and then finding out it was just a mirage.

With Deadpool and Wolverine now accessible on home media and streamable through a Disney+ subscription, viewers can pause the 34th Marvel movie at their leisure to fully appreciate all its hidden details, or Easter eggs. However, for those who believed they noticed a discreet reference to Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World, a film Russell Crowe is proud to defend, I must sadly correct this misconception as that specific Easter egg has been debunked. Fear not though, as even Deadpool and Wolverine’s director, Shawn Levy, initially thought it was genuine.

In The Void, during Ryan Reynolds’ and Hugh Jackman’s adventure, you’ll notice a variety of items from previous Marvel films, including those produced under Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and 20th Century Fox. Furthermore, a colonial ship can be seen in the background for one scene, leading some to speculate that it is the same ship featured in Master & Commander. This theory was supported by Shawn Levy when he discussed it on Entertainment Weekly’s Awardist podcast, stating that it was indeed the same vessel.

I think that the answer is yes.

Initially, I thought it was a fun Easter egg cooked up by the Deadpool & Wolverine visual effects team, but later on, during our conversation, the director clarified that this ship wasn’t a nod to Master and Commander as I had presumed. In an email afterward, he confirmed this ship didn’t originate from their reference library.

As a gamer, I took a standard ship from my collection, then spruced it up by changing the color and adding personalized sails. Now, it’s truly a unique creation of my own design in the world of Dungeons & Dragons & Warlords.

If Shawn Levy was tricked by the VFX team’s work on transforming the ordinary ship, then bravo to them! Unfortunately, Deadpool & Wolverine no longer have any resemblance to Master and Commander… though this doesn’t affect the movie’s overall quality in any way. It would have been an exciting homage to a Fox cinematic Marvel-less production from the past. Ryan Reynolds himself hinted at another famous ship being considered for inclusion in The Void during that Entertainment Weekly interview.

Also, the Titanic was one option, as well, and then it changed a few times.

It’s intriguing to imagine what the Titanic would look like, although since only a faint image of it is shown, I can understand why the special effects team behind Deadpool & Wolverine opted to adjust a pre-existing ship instead. Unfortunately, Master & Commander didn’t fare well in the third installment, which makes me yearn even more for the 2003 film to be streamable. Frankly, it would be fantastic if it could be accessed by Hulu subscribers!

Following the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, breaking records as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever and the second highest-earning movie release in 2024, we now look forward to Captain America: Brave New World, set for release on February 14, 2025.
