One Independence Day Scene Makes Jeff Goldblum Cry

As a film enthusiast and an admirer of the acting craft, I find myself deeply moved by Jeff Goldblum’s recent emotional outburst during his re-watch of Independence Day. The scene between David Lavinson and Julius Levinson is undeniably poignant, and it seems that Goldblum himself feels a profound connection to it, especially as a father of two young children.

In a recent viewing, Jeff Goldblum brought back our affection for him by openly weeping over Independence Day, a 1996 sci-fi action movie directed by Roland Emmerich. In this film, Goldblum teamed up with Will Smith as an extraterrestrial race attacked Earth. Goldblum portrayed David Lavinson, a radar expert who played a pivotal role in Earth’s battle against the aliens due to his intellect, enabling him to deactivate their ship’s protective shields. Judd Hirsch took on the role of Julius Levinson, David’s father, and the two shared a close bond in the movie, often engaging in chess games. One of the film’s most emotional moments features them saying heartfelt farewells before David embarked on Earth’s final stand against the invading aliens

In a conversation with Vanity Fair, Jeff Goldblum was presented with a scene featuring David and Julius Levinson. Unlike regular interviews where actors watch a scene and reminisce about the filming process, Goldblum unexpectedly became emotional while viewing the clip. He attributed this emotional response to a shift in his perspective since becoming a parent. The moment that moved him the most was when Julius told his son, “I’m proud of you.” Goldblum further clarified that this scene held new significance for him due to his personal experiences as a father

“Wow, that’s intense. With my own two kids, aged 7 and 9, I can barely fathom the courage it must have taken to risk something as drastic as you did. The thought of having to potentially say goodbye forever is almost unbearable. It’s heart-wrenching, truly. You really managed to make an impact, I don’t know how you do it. Why did you affect me like this?”

Jeff Goldblum Reveals His Favorite Judd Hirsch Movie

Interestingly, Jeff Goldblum didn’t delve into his work on Independence Day during the interview. After being deeply affected by the scene, Goldblum continued to express his emotions by talking about his favorite performance by his co-star Judd Hirsch instead. Goldblum admired Hirsch’s performance in the 1980 drama Ordinary People, directed by Robert Redford, which he called a “tearjerker.” Goldblum stated that it was:

“I’ve encountered him in various productions, among them Ordinary People – quite the tear-jerker! As soft as I can be, this movie really got to me. In particular, there’s a scene where Judd Hirsch’s character, the therapist, provides comfort. They meet at his office, and he’s on the verge of tears, experiencing some sort of breakthrough. Then, Tim Hutton asks him, ‘Are we friends?’ To which Judd Hirsch replies, ‘You can certainly rely on me.’ And they embrace.”

Everyone loves movies for different reasons. After all, like all art forms, cinema is subjective. Some go for big action blockbusters that get the adrenaline going, others enjoy a heartwarming underdog story, and some people go to the movies for a good cry. Jeff Goldblum is one of the latter. The actor embraces his emotional side, and shares with his kids the importance of letting out your emotions, especially during a heartbreaking movie (nobody should show Jeff Goldblum Aftersun). He explained:

“I enjoy watching movies that bring tears to my eyes, and I share these films with my children. When I get emotional, they ask, ‘What’s wrong, Dad?’ To which I reply, ‘It’s just really sad.'”
