As a long-time comic book enthusiast and moviegoer, I’ve seen my fair share of superhero films, from the dark and gritty to the light-hearted and humorous. In this ongoing battle of cinematic styles between James Gunn and Zack Snyder, I find myself swaying towards Team Gunn. While Snyder’s visual spectacles are undeniably stunning, they often lack the narrative depth that makes a story truly engaging.
As I took a break from developing the second and third Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel Studios, I found myself diving into 2021’s The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1. It turned out to be a great decision. Now, not only am I overseeing the future DC movies and TV shows as the co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, but I’m also directing the 2025 Superman movie and managing Peacemaker Season 2. However, not everyone seems to be happy with my role at DC, as shown by someone comparing my cinematography to Zack Snyder’s. This sparked a significant reaction from many DC fans who strongly disagreed with the comparison
The events unfolded initially on the platform previously known as Twitter, where @RizviAzaad shared a video. The video commences with thrilling sequences from both ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’. However, it transitions to snippets from Season 1 of ‘Peacemaker’, which can be viewed with a Max subscription, and features sound effects of flatulence throughout. You can verify this here:
Regarding cinematography, it seems Zack Snyder is generally favored over James Gunn based on comments about post X. Yet, many also argued that when it comes to storytelling, James Gunn takes the lead among these two directors. Here are some of the comments defending James Gunn:
- Cinematography is a waste if the film is shit and that’s the case for Zack Snyder’s films – @jimlogans
- But Season 1 of Peacemaker was better than anything DC that Snyder ever made. And by a lot. – @CousinNicky3
- To all the Snyder bros here: If what Zack gave us was so great and wonderful, why did it fail to garner much love outside the Snyder cult? The only people who loved those overly dark slow motion heavy films were the Snyder bros 🫤 – @kevin_meiz1988
- honestly got more enjoyment out of the back half of that video – @AristotleDreher
- I love zack but he can’t tell a story to save his life – @NanaQuame_jo
- One couldn’t Crack the billion dollar mark with arguably the greatest heros of all time and one turned c list characters in to mainstream heroes. – @Kgahlis20808921
This doesn’t mean that supporters of Zack Snyder didn’t voice their opinions and express that they value his work more than James Gunn. Additionally, when discussing cinematography, it’s reasonable to argue that Snyder has more striking visual moments in his films. However, the fans of James Gunn have been quite vocal in defending the filmmaker’s abilities in this post. Regardless of your stance on this matter, one point that can’t be contested is that Zack Snyder won’t be returning to the DC universe anytime soon, if at all
Instead, Snyder’s next project is an animated series titled “Twilight of the Gods,” set to debut for Netflix subscribers on September 19. He also aims to continue the “Rebel Moon” franchise beyond the initial two films and their director’s cuts. As for Gunn, we’ll find out how his “Superman” movie fares when it hits theaters on July 11, 2025
