One Of Friends' Fan-Favorite Guest Stars Didn't Think They Were Famous Enough To Cameo, And I Almost Can't Believe It

As a long-time fan of cinema and television, I can confidently say that Isabella Rossellini’s self-doubt about her fame level is nothing short of preposterous! With a stellar career spanning decades, starring in iconic films such as Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, and Death Becomes Her, it’s hard to imagine anyone not recognizing her brilliance.

The popular NBC sitcom “Friends” was not just about the regular characters at Central Perk; it also delighted fans with memorable side characters and an array of top-tier guest stars. Ranging from Bruce Willis, who recently shared heartwarming Thanksgiving photos of his family, to Julia Roberts, viewers always looked forward to seeing who might make a surprise appearance on “Friends”. Interestingly, it turns out that one of the show’s most successful guest stars felt uncertain about her fame level and even questioned if she was worthy of her cameo. This leaves me astonished that she ever doubted herself.

Back in the late ’80s and early ’90s, I, Isabella Rossellini, graced the silver screen with my presence in some truly remarkable films like “Blue Velvet,” “Wild at Heart,” and “Death Becomes Her.” It’s safe to say that fans of these movies and the iconic sitcom “Friends” would have certainly crossed paths. However, despite my popularity during that time, I never felt quite famous enough to be a part of such a legendary sitcom like “Friends.” In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, I shared this very thought.

It took me by surprise, back then and maybe even now to some extent, that few foreign actors were well-known in America. Yet, Friends invited me, not just as a guest but as a star. I found this astonishing since they recognized me and knew my name. I exclaimed, “Is it truly so that I am that renowned that I can act as a well-known figure?” The experience was wonderful, and it was a pleasure to collaborate with them.

It seems that I must diplomatically express my differing opinion regarding the actress, as I believe she may be underestimating her level of recognition to effectively appear in a cameo as herself. Notably, David Lynch was recognized with an Oscar nomination for his 1986 neo-noir film “Blue Velvet,” where Isabella Rossellini starred alongside Kyle MacLachlan, Dennis Hopper, and Laura Dern. Furthermore, Lynch directed both Rossellini and Dern in the movie “Wild at Heart” in 1990. It is worth mentioning that “Death Becomes Her,” which won an Academy Award for visual effects and has since been adapted into a Broadway play, remains engaging upon rewatching.

But even if you weren’t familiar with Isabella Rossellini before she strolled into Central Perk in the Season 3 episode “The One With Frank Jr.,” how could you not be a fan after watching her completely dismantle Ross (David Schwimmer)?

In the given episode, Ross created a list of five famous personalities he could potentially sleep with while still in a relationship with Rachel (Jennifer Aniston). Isabella Rossellini was one of the finalists, but eventually, she was replaced because Ross felt that being “too internationally known” made it less likely they’d cross paths in his native country.

As I was enjoying my coffee at the local café, none other than Isabella Rossellini casually walks in! With Rachel’s permission, I seize the moment to introduce myself and share that she’s an “alternate” I’ve added to my list. However, when I mention the list, she laughingly reveals she wasn’t aware of being on it!

Funny coincidence, actually! I’ve got a list of five quirky coffee shop fellows, and as fate would have it, the chap you see over there is one of them. Yesterday, I happened to run into him, unknowingly bumping into you instead. Isn’t life full of unexpected twists?

Honestly, her delivery of, “It’s laminated!” alone was award-worthy in my opinion.

As a gamer, I can’t help but relate this to my own gaming experiences. Just like John Stamos probably felt when he guest-starred on Friends, there have been times when I’ve taken on a role that seemed bigger than me. But nothing quite compares to the moment John had, as recounted by the Full House alum.
