As a longtime fan of animated shows, I must say that Regular Show has truly left its mark on my heart (and mind). With its witty humor, lovable characters, and just the right amount of mature content, it’s no wonder this show resonates with people of all ages.

Mark Hamill is well-known for embodying some of the most memorable characters from the last few decades, such as Luke Skywalker and the Joker in various animated series, films, and video games. Interestingly, one lesser-known role that Hamill has reportedly cherished deeply is also part of his impressive portfolio.

Between 2010 and 2017, James Arnold Taylor (referred to commonly as Hamill) lent his voice to the character Skips, who was a yeti-like figure, in Cartoon Network’s animated comedy series, “Regular Show.” This show was a significant part of Cartoon Network’s resurgence during the 2010s, airing alongside other popular shows such as “Adventure Time,” “The Amazing World of Gumball,” and “Steven Universe.” The team behind “Regular Show” was made up of relatively unknown individuals in the animation world at the time, so securing a talent like Hamill was quite notable. This move proved beneficial, as Skips became a fan favorite, and Hamill considers this role among his best. He has also confirmed that he will reprise his role in the upcoming “Regular Show” reboot. For those unaware, what is “Regular Show” about? And why did it garner such high levels of cast, crew, and fan adoration? Let’s delve into its history.

The animated series Regular Show is set in a world similar to ours, inhabited by humans, talking animals, and sentient objects. Most of the story revolves around the park maintenance team in the western U.S., featuring our buddies Mordecai, a blue jay, and Rigby, a raccoon, who often skive off from their duties. The plots initially seem ordinary but quickly escalate into thrilling life-or-death confrontations with powerful supernatural entities. Among the other characters are Benson, a gumball machine come to life and the park’s irascible manager, frequently frustrated by Mordecai and Rigby; Pops, an elderly, always cheerful lollipop-shaped man; and Muscle Man, a green character with an unidentified origin who often hangs out with Hi-Five Ghost.

In the heart of the park dwells Skips, a mysterious yeti who seems to have an eternal life. With centuries behind him, he’s been through every challenge imaginable and knows how to tackle most issues faced by the park workers. His past remains shrouded in mystery, as he prefers solitude over companionship. As the story unfolds, we delve deeper into his history, learning about his transformation from Walks to Skips, a change prompted by a vow to traverse everywhere he goes to preserve the memory of an old flame. The Guardians of Eternal Youth bestowed immortality upon him, and he can maintain it as long as he safeguards the world from its adversaries. By the end of the series, all principal characters have moved on with new lives and families, leaving the park behind. Yet, Skips remains, offering guidance to the latest cohort of employees dealing with their problems.

Regular Show has been lauded by viewers of all ages due to its diverse characters, witty dialogue, and outlandish plotlines receiving high praise. Unlike other shows, Regular Show doesn’t rely on constant, fast-paced jokes to elicit laughter. Instead, the humor comes from the natural absurdity of each situation. Although it airs on Cartoon Network, the early episodes occasionally included mild cursing and veiled references to drugs and alcohol. While these elements were toned down after the first season, making it a more family-friendly program, this mature content was one of the key factors contributing to its popularity.

The main voices in Regular Show are often provided by the show’s own crew members. Notably, some secondary roles are given by renowned voice actors such as Steven Blum and Roger Craig Smith. However, it’s Hamill who stands out as the most prominent name among the cast. According to the crew and creator J.G. Quintel, Hamill was a delight to work with. In an interview with Wired in 2012, Quintel reminisced about casting Luke Skywalker, expressing that it was a pleasure to have him on board.

Mark is incredibly skilled. Upon his arrival, he radiates an aura similar to Luke Skywalker, yet when he activates the Skips voice, it’s astonishing! It’s as if he transforms into another dimension. Having him around is truly fascinating, and we’re thrilled that he chose to join us.

In June 2024, when it was announced that Regular Show would be rebooted, Hamill was eager to return to the project; and at Fan Expo Chicago in August 2024, during a panel discussion, he shared his thoughts on what made Regular Show so popular.

“I found it entertaining, with a similar feel to Beavis and Butthead. It centers around two characters, Mordecai and Rigby, who seem to be constantly criticizing others, much like those characters. I hadn’t expected this kind of show, especially since it’s for kids. If it were on Adult Swim and they could include mature humor like pot references, that would make sense, but this is a kids’ program.

As a passionate fan myself, I can’t hide my excitement that Mark Hamill is reprising his role for the upcoming “Regular Show” reboot! Though he may be best known for other roles, this animated series deserves more accolades. If it’s among one of Mark Hamill’s favorite performances, then it’s definitely worth your time. You can catch all the adventures on Hulu!
