As a die-hard anime enthusiast who grew up with One Piece and watched it unfold episode by episode, this latest news about the move to Crunchyroll’s premium tier has left me feeling like I’m walking the plank on Water 7. It seems that my old friend Luffy is no longer a “free man” and is now trapped behind a paywall, much to the dismay of many fans who wanted to join him on his Grand Line adventure without breaking the bank.
For quite some time, “One Piece” has been accessible for free (with advertisements) on the Crunchyroll streaming platform. This was an ideal option for those eager to watch over a thousand episodes of this renowned series without incurring significant costs. However, it appears that within the next few months, the majority of “One Piece” will move behind a subscription-based paywall, which has left many longtime fans and potential new viewers feeling disheartened.
According to IGN, more than 900 episodes of One Piece will transition to the premium subscription service on Crunchyroll. Starting with some fan-favorite seasons, these episodes will be gradually moved into a pay-to-view section over time. Notable seasons such as “Water 7,” “Summit War,” “WANO KUNI,” and “Egghead” will become part of this premium content. It appears that One Piece will remain in the paid tier when it resumes after its break. The Crunchyroll premium plan starts at $7.99 per month. Here are the phases:
- Phase 1 on December 23: Water 7, Thriller Bark, Summit War, and Fishman Island arcs (344 episodes)
- Phase 2 on January 20 – Punk Hazard, Dressrosa, Zou, and Whole Cake island arcs plus 6 special episodes (305 episodes)
- Phase 3 on February 17 – Reverie, WANO KUNI, and Egghead Island arcs (247 episodes)
The popular anime series “One Piece” has temporarily stopped airing for six months until early 2025, giving fans ample opportunity to watch and get up to speed on its extensive library of over 1000 episodes before the Egghead arc resumes. Regrettably, Crunchyroll is capitalizing on this extended break by charging viewers to stream the cherished animated program. Frankly speaking, even Monkey D. Luffy would likely be taken aback by the notion of “One Piece” being hidden behind a paywall. Admittedly, it does bring to mind the arrogant Celestial Dragons. On a positive note, newcomers can still enjoy the first 200 episodes in the free, ad-supported tier on Crunchyroll.
‘One Piece’ is Getting Bigger and Bigger
Delighted by the growing impact of the iconic series “One Piece” in mainstream pop culture, I find myself captivated by the innovative ways fans can immerse themselves in its timeless narrative. With more than a thousand anime episodes, a few non-canonical films, and some intriguing video games under its belt, “One Piece” is now amplifying its reach with its live-action Netflix series. The successful first season has sparked great excitement for the upcoming second season, which is being carefully overseen by the original manga creator Eiichiro Oda in his executive producer role. Although we have a bit of a wait ahead as production has expanded this time around, rest assured that “One Piece” is here to stay, whether live-action or not. Here’s what Eiichiro Oda shared about the much-anticipated Season 2:
The sets are massive, the level of detail is astounding, the crew’s enthusiasm for the project is unmatched, and the food? It’s fantastic! This newfound sense of duty is stronger due to my position. I had the opportunity to talk not just with the returning actors from Season 1, but also every new face. My decisions regarding casting were made from afar in Japan, based on photos and videos, but meeting everyone in person solidified that they were spot-on choices! Rest assured, this season will outshine the first one!
Regarding the animated series “One Piece,” the temporary pause didn’t turn out to be entirely unfavorable. Following this hiatus, a special 30-minute episode titled “One Piece Fan Letter” was released, often hailed as one of the top anime episodes of the year. Additionally, the production team has assured fans that upon its return, the animation and sound quality will be enhanced, a promise that has already seen significant improvements in recent times.
