One Piece Misses #1 Spot for Best-Selling Manga of the Year in New Top 50 Ranking

Regardless of its growing global recognition, it didn’t manage to secure the position of top-selling manga in 2024. Instead, the accolade was bestowed upon a series once published in Weekly Shonen Jump, which concluded after a six-year run in 2024, receiving both praise and criticism.

The latest annual comic sales ranking for 2024, posted by Shonen Jump News and Rand0manga on platform X (previously known as Twitter), has been released. This extensive list of 50 titles showcases the sales figures for manga published in Japan during 2024. As anticipated, several top-performing titles hail from Weekly Shonen Jump. However, what could catch the attention of viewers is that One Piece, though still popular, didn’t claim the title of best-selling manga of 2024. Instead, another Shonen Jump series, despite its divisive conclusion, managed to maintain its robust readership and sales in 2024, earning the #1 ranking.

Despite some criticisms surrounding its plot holes and creative choices, Jujutsu Kaisen’s immense popularity persisted, making it one of the most anticipated series in Shonen Jump. Launched on March 5, 2018, and concluding on Sept. 30, 2024, after a six-year run in Weekly Shonen Jump, the series penned by Gege Akutami captivated audiences with its rich character development reminiscent of earlier Shonen Jump hits like Naruto and Bleach, while simultaneously delivering a haunting supernatural storyline that largely respected the impactful deaths of its main characters.

Without a doubt, as an avid fan of Shonen Jump series, I can’t help but express my excitement over the meteoric rise in popularity of Jujutsu Kaisen. The anime TV adaptation by studio MAPPA catapulted this series to global fame in 2023, earning it the title of the most sought-after TV show worldwide that year. However, the incredible success of Jujutsu Kaisen’s anime was marred by production issues and burnout during Season 2. This unfortunate situation led to unfinished animation for much-anticipated scenes during its initial broadcast, leaving fans disappointed. As of now, MAPPA has yet to announce a new season for Jujutsu Kaisen. The only confirmed news for the series at this time is that it plans to adapt the “Culling Game” story arc.

Despite One Piece continuing to sell exceptionally well, some readers found it surprising that it didn’t top the list as the best-selling manga of 2024, considering its expanded global reach and substantial advancements in its ongoing narrative.

The “Egghead” storyline, now being translated into the anime version of “One Piece”, delved deeper into the intricacies. It offered readers a more defined understanding of the extraordinary world within “One Piece” and the potential consequences if Monkey D. Luffy and his companions do not manage to find the legendary treasure. Furthermore, it hinted that, despite being several years away, the 30-year-old series might be approaching its conclusion. If series creator Eiichiro Oda decides to end “One Piece” prematurely, the franchise will continue through its various spin-offs and adaptations.
