One Piece Season 2 Unveils Exciting New Details, Including Filming Schedule & Release Date

As a devoted fan of One Piece since its anime debut in 1999, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and disappointment upon hearing the latest updates about the live-action series’ second season. The news that filming won’t be completed until the end of this year and might not even premiere until mid-2026 is certainly disheartening, considering the first season took around twenty months from production to airing. However, I understand that VFX-heavy projects can take a considerable amount of time, and Tomorrow Studios has other priorities this year.

New details have emerged about the highly anticipated second season of the “One Piece” live-action series on Netflix. This long-awaited installment now has a confirmed filming schedule and release date. Based on the acclaimed manga by Eiichiro Oda, which has produced over 1100 anime episodes since 1999, this adaptation was an instant hit when it debuted in August 2023. Fans were blown away by the spot-on casting of Inaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, Taz Skylar as Sanji, and Vincent Regan as Garp. The live-action adaptation’s captivating storyline, which remains just as engaging and thrilling as the anime and manga, has further cemented its place in the hearts of fans.

Recently, in an interview with Deadline, Becky Clements, the President of Tomorrow Studios, provided insights on the upcoming second season of “One Piece.” She discussed production plans, casting speculations, and potential release dates for this highly anticipated series.

Based on my experience working in the film industry, I can tell you that July and August are the most challenging months for us. With this production being particularly heavy on Visual Effects (VFX), we had to make adjustments to our shooting schedule. Instead of tackling most of our exterior work during the summer months, we decided to push it towards the end of the year. Given the complexity of this project, we’re anticipating a lengthy post-production process and are currently quite far from completion. In fact, we’ll be filming well into December.

As a dedicated One Piece gamer, I’m excitedly looking forward to the upcoming season 2. However, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer than anticipated for its release. The production team has mentioned that filming won’t be completed until the end of this year, and given how VFX-heavy our beloved series is, this delay only adds to my anxiety. With the first season taking about twenty months from start to finish (January 2022 to August 2023), we were hoping for a fall 2025 premiere. But, as Clements has shared that they have several other VFX projects in line this year, further delays are not unforeseen. Consequently, the release date for One Piece season 2 might be pushed back to mid-2026. Fingers crossed that things go smoothly and we can finally dive back into the world of One Piece sooner rather than later!

For those eagerly anticipating the sequel to the “One Piece” live-action series, there’s another piece of potentially disappointing news. Previously speculated as an excellent fit for the character Dr. Kureha, who makes her appearance in the Drum Island Arc, Jamie Lee Curtis has unfortunately been ruled out due to scheduling conflicts. As Clements put it,

Jamie Lee Curtis is currently committed to numerous film and TV projects that are set to go into production, which conflicts with our planned schedule. Despite her strong desire to be involved, her prior commitments took precedence and made things complicated for us. Fortunately, we’ve found a fantastic replacement person for the role.

In the initial run of One Piece, the first season covered the events of the East Blue Saga. This storyline includes the sub-arcs of Romance Dawn, Orange Town, Syrup Village, Baratie, Arlong Park, and Loguetown. Notably missing from this adaptation is the final arc of the saga. It is here where the character Smoker, a well-known Marine, makes his appearance, as hinted at in the post-credits scene of the previous season.

As an avid fan, I’m excited to share that this upcoming season will feature an adaptation of a shorter story arc, which is expected to become a single captivating episode. Following this, we’ll get to witness the long-awaited Arabasta Saga. This thrilling saga consists of the Reverse Mountain, Whisky Peak, Little Garden, Drum Island, and Arabasta arcs. Not only will we be introduced to a new member joining the Straw Hats crew, but also key characters like Crocodile and Nico Robin will make their appearance. With high expectations, I believe this season will provide us with just as much, if not more, entertainment than the previous one, provided the adaptation remains faithful to the original material.
