As a dedicated fan of both Jamie Lee Curtis and “One Piece,” I was thrilled to learn that the esteemed actress expressed her desire to join the cast of the live-action adaptation of the beloved anime series last year. Her passion for “One Piece” is evident, and I could only imagine the excitement of seeing her bring Dr. Kureha to life on screen.
Jamie Lee Curtis, who has won an Academy Award and been nominated for an Emmy, is not only a renowned actress but also an avid fan of “One Piece,” the popular manga/anime series. Last year, she expressed her desire to join the cast as Dr. Kureha in the live-action adaptation available with a Netflix subscription. Showrunner Matt Owens and his team were considering her proposal. Regrettably, Curtis has decided against playing Kureha in “One Piece” Season 2. However, I’m pleased to share some promising news about Dr. Kureha and the future of this excellent Netflix show.
Why Jamie Lee Curtis Won’t Be In One Piece
Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, heads of Tomorrow Studios, discussed some forthcoming TV projects with Deadline. Among these is the second season of “One Piece.” Regarding Jamie Lee Curtis’ involvement, they mentioned her schedule being overloaded, with Clements explaining: “She unfortunately couldn’t find the time for our series.”
As a gamer, I’m really excited about that show. But unfortunately, with so many movies and TV series in the pipeline for me to produce, our schedules don’t align. I truly wanted to be a part of it, but my current projects take priority and things got complicated.
I wasn’t shocked when I learned in late June that Curtis might not be able to appear in “One Piece” due to her new film project, “Freaky Friday 2,” starting up. It’s reassuring to have this confirmed, but on a positive note, Clements mentioned they’ve found an excellent replacement for Dr. Kureha, who raised and taught Chopper the medical sciences. With several Season 2 castings having been announced recently, including David Dastmalchian as Mr. 3, we might discover the identity of this actor soon. Whether that’s the case or if it will take longer, I’m excited to see how they bring Dr. Kureha to life on screen.
The Producers Intend For One Piece To Go For A Long Time
In September 2023, approximately a month after the debut of One Piece‘s first live-action season on a top-tier streaming platform, producers Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements revealed their intention to create at least six seasons of the adaptation. Although they didn’t share an exact figure this time, Clements did mention that extensive plans have been set in place for the show’s longevity. When probed about how far ahead they’re looking, she responded:
I’m thrilled about the plans Matt Owens and I have in mind. Our incredible partners are on board and eager to progress. I can assure you, our creative minds are fully engaged, ready to bring forth numerous seasons of exciting content.
I’m genuinely thrilled about the possibility that Netflix’s adaptation of “One Piece” will have a long-lasting run. It makes perfect sense for Matt Owens and the team to plan ahead, instead of just taking it one season at a time. However, whether “One Piece” will last for six seasons or more is uncertain, as most Netflix live-action shows typically don’t go beyond five. Furthermore, the “One Piece” manga and anime are still ongoing with 109 volumes in total, so it’s unlikely that the live-action series will follow the same ending. Additionally, certain arcs like Impel Down and Marineford require a substantial budget to execute effectively. I remain optimistic that Netflix will provide the required funding.
Currently, “One Piece” fans have the pleasure of looking forward to the fact that filming for Season 2 is underway in South Africa and is predicted to wrap up camera work by December. Consequently, it’s anticipated that this series will make its debut some time in the year 2025. For television shows scheduled to air later in 2024, kindly refer to our 2024 TV calendar.
