As someone who’s been a dedicated fan of One Piece since its early days, I can say with absolute certainty that the live-action adaptation on Netflix has been a game-changer! The surge of interest it sparked has not only led me to revisit old episodes on Crunchyroll but also fueled my passion for collecting more One Piece merchandise. It’s like the Straw Hat Pirates have taken over my house, and I couldn’t be happier!
It’s common knowledge that Netflix stands as one of the top streaming platforms, mainly due to its continuously expanding collection of original productions. One of its most successful ventures is the live-action adaptation of the widely acclaimed manga/anime “One Piece,” which debuted about a year ago. The show garnered numerous positive reviews and attracted massive viewership, leading swiftly to the announcement of “One Piece” Season 2 just a few weeks later. Interestingly, the success of this live-action “One Piece” positively impacted another streaming service as well.
During an interview with The Wrap, Gita Rebbapragada, the COO of Crunchyroll, was questioned about whether viewership on their anime-focused streaming platform ever increases due to anime programming on other channels or streaming services. She acknowledged that there is a connection and mentioned One Piece as an illustration, stating:
On Netflix, a larger audience tends to prefer live-action content over animation. As a result, when it comes to franchises like One Piece, both the merchandise sales and streaming of the original series have seen an increase. This isn’t exclusive to Crunchyroll, as other platforms also host One Piece. When a franchise experiences a significant moment, all related platforms tend to benefit, much like how all boats rise with the tide.
While it’s possible to enjoy both the anime adaptation of “One Piece” and its live-action version on Netflix, unfortunately, a significant number of episodes are not available on that platform at this moment. Conversely, Crunchyroll offers the complete series of “One Piece” for its subscribers. With the growing popularity of the live-action show, viewers have been rediscovering the original anime along with other shows on Crunchyroll. This resurgence in interest has even resulted in a spike in sales for “One Piece” merchandise available on their website. As a result, Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates have seen an increase in popularity!
More One Piece Coverage
As a gaming enthusiast who can hardly contain my excitement over the introduction of Baroque Works characters in Netflix’s One Piece Season 2, I can’t help but ponder how they plan to bring Mr. 2 to life on screen.
It appears that Jamie Lee Curtis won’t be part of One Piece Season 2, but I’m excited about the producers’ updates on Dr. Kureha and the future of the Netflix show instead.
The anime adaptation of “One Piece” has been airing since 1999, two years following Eiichiro Oda’s initial release of the manga series. Despite already having a massive fanbase, it is evident that the live-action series has successfully introduced many more individuals to Luffy and his crew’s epic voyage across the Grand Line in search of the elusive “One Piece” treasure, left behind by the legendary pirate, Gol D. Roger. However, I wonder how much of this increased viewership on Crunchyroll was driven by existing fans of the series compared to newcomers who enjoyed the Netflix adaptation.
Hey there fellow One Piece enthusiasts! If you’re hooked on the grand adventure of Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates, it’s a must to keep that Netflix subscription active. Reason being, Season 2 is currently in production and we might get to see it air sometime around 2025. But here’s the real kicker – Netflix will be the exclusive platform for “The One Piece,” an all-new anime series reboot, picking up the magical tale from the East Blue story arc. To top it off, they’re also adding older story arcs along with new releases, giving us even more reasons to sail the digital seas on Netflix!
Over the past month, Netflix has revealed some significant castings for the upcoming Season 2 of One Piece, but there are still many crucial roles yet to be announced. As we eagerly anticipate more updates and information about the forthcoming episodes, why not explore other outstanding shows currently streaming on Netflix?
