On the 2025 TV schedule, Saturday Night Live is resuming its regular broadcasts after a spectacular 50th anniversary special in February, which was hosted by Shane Gillis for the second time. Gillis, who was previously dismissed from SNL before Season 45, returned to deliver laughs once more. One particular sketch has become viral as fans draw comparisons to John Candy due to its similarities when rewatched with that context in mind.
As a fan of Saturday Night Live’s clever commercial parodies, you never can predict the outrageous product they’ll dream up next! In this instance, it was a medication called Coupla Beers, which perfectly fit with their past sketches. For this segment, Gillis donned quite the stylish attire, even if it was only partially so, and was seen rooting for his “son” at baseball games. The sketch is downright hilarious, and even though it’s fictional, I can’t help but secretly hope it’s a real product! Take a look at the sketch below:

Due to the rapid spread of the drawing, numerous individuals have remarked on the strong resemblance between Gillis and the late comedian John Candy. Known for films like “The Great Outdoors,” “Uncle Buck,” “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” and “Spaceballs,” among others, Candy had a distinctive charm from his early days in “SCTV” to his passing. On platform X, many people were astonished by the likeness between Gillis and Candy, with user Tedbrogan23 even sharing a split image of the two, and it’s quite striking how alike they appear.
Interestingly, AmazingPopPod posted a comparison between Gillis and Candy, which was unexpected since it wasn’t the same set of images shared by Tedbrogan23 earlier. However, these new screenshots further emphasize their striking similarity, a point I can certainly agree with.
Rather than merely pointing out the similarities between Gillis and Candy, maniacspodcast goes a step beyond, and the hilarity of this observation leaves me questioning its authenticity.
Even though a John Candy biopic hasn’t been made yet, fans continue to speculate about who should play him. One name that has surfaced is Shane Gillis, whom some believe would excel in portraying Candy’s legendary character if such a film ever comes to fruition.
Could Shane Gillis play John Candy in a biopic?
There’s debate over whether Gillis deliberately mimicked Candy’s appearance or if it was a fluke, but regardless, there’s general agreement. Despite the fact that he won’t be able to match Candy’s influence and comedic impact, his resemblance is striking, and it wouldn’t be unexpected if he were cast in a biopic at some point. Or perhaps, when hosting Saturday Night Live again, he could give a spot-on impersonation of Candy.
Fans have the liberty to decide if Gillis resembles Candy based on the sketch available on YouTube or by streaming the full episode with a Peacock subscription. At this point, there are numerous musical guests and hosts to anticipate for SNL‘s 50th season.
