As a devoted fan of the captivating world of Only Murders in the Building, I can’t help but marvel at the remarkable cast that graces our screens every week. One name that consistently stands out is Catherine Cohen, whose comedic prowess was showcased beautifully in her Netflix special The Twist…? She’s Gorgeous. In this series, she plays Tawny Brothers, a co-director of the podcast’s film adaptation, and her character holds significant influence over Mabel, Charles, and Oliver’s future.
Ever since its debut in 2021, Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” has amassed a dedicated and expanding fanbase. The story unfolds within the fictitious Arconia apartment building in Manhattan, where three armchair detectives – Mabel, Charles, and Oliver – delve into unsolved murders within their residence while simultaneously podcasting about them. Portrayed by Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short respectively, the trio’s chemistry was already well-known, but Gomez seamlessly fits in with this charming ensemble.
Every season, this series spotlights a distinct murder and boasts an impressive roster of well-known guest stars. Luminaries like Sting, Amy Schumer, Matthew Broderick, Meryl Streep (now a recurring character), and Paul Rudd are among those who have graced the screen. The upcoming Season 4 brings about significant changes for OMITB. Initially, part of the show has moved from the East Coast to the West, setting up shop in Los Angeles. Furthermore, it maintains its tradition by welcoming a multitude of talented guest actors. Learn more about who you’ll see joining the cast this season.
8 Molly Shannon
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can confidently affirm that Molly Shannon has mastered the art of comedy. Her extensive experience on iconic shows like Saturday Night Live, coupled with her memorable performances in films such as Never Been Kissed and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, have set high expectations for her audience. And her latest role in the critically acclaimed black comedy series The White Lotus, a witty portrayal of the complexities among the wealthy, only solidifies her versatility across both film and television.
Calling the Shots
She becomes part of the cast for the series titled “OMITB“, portraying Bev Melon – a producer at Paramount Studios with ambitions to transform the podcast into a movie. Her character is resolute, valuing no cost over her goals. Furthermore, she must navigate some tense situations between the film’s actors and their actual counterparts. It seems that Bev’s role will be instrumental in addressing this season’s mystery, as suggested by the pilot episode.
7 Richard Kind
It came as a surprise when audiences found a blend of Pixar animation with a humorous whodunit – this is something Richard Kind, known for voicing characters in various Pixar films such as A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 3, has been involved in. While his character Bing Bong from Inside Out might have won over many hearts, Kind refuses to stick to one type of role. He explores various genres and even dabbles in Broadway performances.
A Really Nice (and strange) Guy
In the series OMITB, he portrays Vince Fish, a resident of the Arconia’s West Tower, making him part of the “West Tower group.” His introduction comes in episode two, titled “Gates of Heaven.” He is easily recognized by his eye patch, although it isn’t clear if this ties into Charles’ statement that Vince gives him a disapproving look. Despite this, Vince appears amiable, frequently socializing with other West Tower residents and contributing to the unique collection of characters within the Arconia.
6 Melissa McCarthy
As a film enthusiast, it’s hard to find words that haven’t already been used to introduce the brilliant Melissa McCarthy. For years, she’s been a beloved figure in comedy, gracing both the big and small screen with her Academy Award-nominated talent. From the charming world of Stars Hollow on “Gilmore Girls” to the riotous bridesmaid fiasco in “Bridesmaids”, from the heartwarming laughter of “Mike & Molly” to the intriguing drama of “Nine Perfect Strangers”, McCarthy’s impeccable comedic timing and sharp wit are the common threads that bind these diverse roles together.
So Much Anticipation
Although it would be exciting to see McCarthy reprising her own role on OMITB, given her exceptional talent as a versatile actress, viewers can anticipate her bringing a fresh character to life. Specifically, she’ll portray Charles’ sister from Long Island. As of early September, we haven’t witnessed her character in action yet. However, sneak peeks of McCarthy in costume have built up excitement among fans for her debut.
5 Jin Ha
Jin Ha, known for his work on productions such as the hit musical “Hamilton” and the award-winning book-to-screen series “Pachinko”, is now joining our project, OMITB. In this new role, he will be portraying Marshall Peepope, a screenwriter working on the film adaptation of our podcast. Early reports suggest that his character exhibits peculiar and inquisitive traits, making him an ideal fit for a mystery series.
Many Unknowns
Apart from these fundamental details, it remains unclear what role he plays in the series for him. To the dismay of some viewers and acceptance of others, Mabel seems to have a fresh romantic interest every season. Is it possible that Ha could become her latest ally-turned-romantic partner?
4 Scott Bakula
At the outset, it becomes clear that the season’s murder victim is none other than the renowned character Sazz, portrayed by Jane Lynch. Initially appearing as the stunt double for Charles, a role she used to charm his love interests away, Sazz has been a memorable figure despite only appearing in a few episodes. However, her tenure on the show is about to conclude, as she was fatally shot at the end of season three and her murder serves as the central mystery for season four. Now, we must ponder, how does Scott Bakula fit into this storyline?
The First Domino
In the initial episode of season 4, titled “Once Upon a Time in the West“, Bakula, famously known for his long-term role as a special agent on NCIS: New Orleans, steps into his own character. Unaware that Sazz has been murdered, Charles doesn’t hesitate when he receives a message from his old friend saying she’s heading to L.A. for work. The job turns out to be standing in for none other than Scott Bakula. It isn’t until Charles encounters Bakula and learns that Sazz didn’t show up, that suspicion begins to arise. Although he won’t have a major role this season, his presence sets the stage for the investigation that follows.
3 Siena Werber and Catherine Cohen
Siena Werber, an emerging actress, made her mark with a supporting role in the underappreciated Netflix horror series, “Brand New Cherry Flavor.” Meanwhile, Catherine Cohen is a comedian who showcased her talent in the Netflix special, “The Twist…? She’s Gorgeous.” In the TV show “Only Murders in the Building,” they both appear as the sisters, Tawny Brothers (played by Werber) and Trina Brothers (Cohen). As a duo, these talented women serve as co-directors for the podcast’s film adaptation.
How Important Are They?
In essence, they wield significant influence over Mabel, Charles, and Oliver’s upcoming events. They go so far as to request them to relinquish their life rights for the film’s production. While they appear amusingly antagonistic in the series, it’s unclear if they are the main villains or not. The plot leaves open the question of their ultimate evilness.
2 Kumail Nanjiani
As a big fan, I can’t help but acknowledge that Kumail Nanjiani has made quite an impression in the comedy world. Many of us know him as the charming Dinesh from the popular HBO series “Silicon Valley,” which concluded back in 2019. His star power continues to shine brightly, with a leading role in the Hulu show, “Welcome to Chippendales” (released in 2022). Most recently, he’s landed significant roles in the upcoming films “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” (set for release in 2024) and the animated kids’ movie, “Migration” (slated for 2023).
A Key Piece to the Puzzle
In March 2024, Variety revealed that Nanjiani joined the cast for season 4. The character, named Rudy Thurber, lives in Arconia. As per the news source, Nanjiani’s role is crucial to the season’s investigation. Moreover, it appears that he enjoys wearing Christmas sweaters, and Mr. Haden-Savage finds this somewhat questionable. However, his apartment is festive with Christmas decorations as Mabel and Eva Longoria visit him for questioning, which makes one wonder if he could be all that suspicious after all.
1 Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, and Zach Galifianakis
With the podcast gaining significant traction, they receive an invitation from Beverly Melon, a representative of Paramount Pictures, proposing a potential movie version. This proposition sets them on a journey to Los Angeles. The characters are portrayed by none other than Eva Longoria (as Mabel), Eugene Levy (Charles), and Zach Galifianakis (Oliver). The encounter between them all is undeniably awkward, given that the actors donned some of their most recognized costumes while attempting to embody the characters.
Lots of Fun Moments in Store
Among the trio, the dynamic between Oliver and Zach is undeniably the most captivating. It’s no secret that Oliver thrives in the limelight, and sharing it with Zach isn’t his first choice. Meanwhile, Eva is curious if they should stick with the name ‘Mabel,’ a preference echoed by the original Mabel herself.
To fully embody and bring out the authenticity of Mabel, Charles, and Zach, I choose to delve deep into character studies – a method that involves immersing myself in their daily lives and routines. This upcoming season, a fresh murder mystery may distract them, but rest assured, their on-screen personas will be captivatingly portrayed as they become entangled in the unfolding events.
