As a long-time fanatic gamer of “Only Murders in the Building,” I must admit that this season is really turning out to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The twist with Jan Bellows escaping from prison and reappearing in Charles’ life has left me utterly baffled!
Contains spoilers for “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4, Episode 2 – “Gates of Heaven”
Following the harrowing ordeals experienced by Charles Haden-Savage (Steve Martin) throughout the previous three seasons of “Only Murders in the Building,” it’s not surprising that he feels his sanity slipping away. Covered in the ashes of his friend and stunt double, Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), he washes them off only to carry the dissolved remains around in a jar during his investigation into her murder. He begins to imagine seeing her. When he hears a sound coming from his closet, out steps Jan Bellows (Amy Ryan), his former girlfriend and a past love of Sazz before her demise, having just escaped from prison. Jan reveals she fled because she too was concerned about Sazz’s fate. Charles is then compelled to inform Jan about the details of Sazz’s death, even helping her conceal her actions as she plots her next steps on the outside. Just as he starts questioning whether Jan is truly real, Donna Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and a SWAT team arrive. Charles learns then that Jan’s escape and murder of a prison guard are indeed genuine events.
If you find yourself wondering how things went so wrong between Charles and Jan, leading to Jan’s imprisonment for murder, let’s take a step back to Season 1. Initially, Jan was a talented bassoonist with a promising career, who hadn’t attracted Charles’ suspicion in the killing of Tim Kono (Julian Cihi). By this point, Charles and Jan were deeply involved romantically when the evidence against them emerged. Mabel and Oliver discovered that Tim and Jan had dated previously, and they realized that Jan was so angry about being dumped by Tim that she had poisoned him, making it look like a suicide. She even attempted to kill Charles to clear her path, but he survived the attack. As a result, Jan was sentenced for Tim’s murder.
Despite spending time in prison since Season 1, Jan’s life inside has remained bustling with activity.
Jan moved on from Charles in a big way
In Seasons 2 and 3, Jan re-enters Charles’ life, causing disruption in his attempts to move on romantically. Charles enlists Jan’s aid in investigating the murder of Bunny Folger, as he, Mabel, and Oliver are being falsely accused. She offers him insights from a killer’s viewpoint regarding the case, eventually identifying the suspect as an artist. They share a poignant recollection of their past relationship.
As the seasons progress, it becomes clear that Sazz and Jan form a romantic bond after Sazz visits the jail to end things with Jan for Charles. Despite his complications with Joy (Andrea Martin), Sazz and Jan enjoy a passionate relationship. Their connection remains strong throughout Season 3, with Sazz expressing admiration for Jan and alluding to their relationship. However, those blissful days are now behind Jan. Yet, she seems open to rekindling things with Charles again. It sometimes feels like some people have all the fortune in love.
