As an admirer of the witty and talented trio that is Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement as they take their beloved series, “Only Murders in the Building,” to the glamorous city of Hollywood for its fourth season. The thought of these three brilliant minds navigating the star-studded terrain of Tinseltown, while still maintaining the charm and essence of their New York roots, is nothing short of intriguing.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that my beloved show, “Only Murders in the Building,” is coming back on August 27 for its fourth season! In anticipation of this exciting return, the talented trio behind the scenes – Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez – are shedding light on their experiences moving the series from the bustling streets of New York to the glamorous world of Hollywood. The journey begins with an episode titled “Once Upon a Time in the West,” where our heroes, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, find themselves in Tinseltown, meeting with executives at a renowned movie studio. They’re all set to transform their hit true-crime podcast into a blockbuster film!
At the premiere of Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building, the three stars discussed their experience shifting the series from its usual New York setting to a brief stop in Los Angeles instead. Gomez, who plays Mabel Mora, quickly expressed that it was an enjoyable change of pace.
“We have a great cast, and we’re going to Hollywood, and it was fun to shoot here for a second.”
Prior to providing more details, Martin – an actor from Inglewood, California, playing Charles-Haden Savage – chuckled politely and interjected, saying, “It’s been a blast filming here! It feels like being on a New York set, but then we get to shoot where I grew up. Essentially, we’re shooting in the Hollywood Hills.”
In response, Short (also known as Oliver Putnam from the series) playfully interrupted him, urging his fellow actor to wrap up his chatter. Essentially, he said, “I understand, you liked it. But I have a flight in two days, so let’s move on.”
Only Murders in the Building Continues to Experiment in Season 4
It appears that every legendary series, eventually recognized as a classic, has experimented with unique, intriguing episodes that make them memorable. Shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Grey’s Anatomy, for instance, have left an enduring impact through their musical episodes. Similarly, Only Murders in the Building follows suit, with its Season 1 episode “The Boy in 6B” featuring a single dialogue word akin to the Buffy episode “Hush.”
In Season 4, they’ll carry on with the pattern, delving into the found footage sub-genre in episode six. Filmed without conventional cameras, Martin finds it not only enjoyable but fittingly in line with the style of the series, as he humorously puts it.
“The experience was genuinely enjoyable as everything felt authentic, complete with concealed cameras, iPhones, and regular phones. The more disorganized it was, the more fitting it seemed for Marty’s acting style [laughs]. It was an entertaining process filming those sequences.”
