As someone who has always been fascinated by architectural marvels that harmoniously blend history and modernity, this Open Architecture project leaves me utterly spellbound! Growing up near the coastline, I’ve often pondered about the stories hidden within those ancient watchtowers and sun-worshipping rituals. To see such a rich past reimagined in the form of the Sun Tower is nothing short of captivating.
Open Architecture recently revealed their newest endeavor – a culturally significant building in Yantai, China, boasting an eye-catching layout inspired by solar motion.
The “Sun Tower” stands within the vibrant Yeda Development Zone, a region established in 1984 that has since evolved into a bustling cultural center. Geographically, this area spans the coastline of the Yellow Sea, an area rich with history dating back to the Ming Dynasty when watchtowers dotted the landscape and sun-centered rituals were practiced.
The architectural design was influenced by this lighthouse’s historical background and other similar structures, leading to the creation of a tower standing 50 meters high with a conical shape.
The unique, cone-shaped building, which stands along the coast of the Yellow Sea, houses an outdoor theater, exhibition areas, a library, café, bar, and a distinctive Phenomena Space. Its design is influenced by the movement of the sun.
The structure was constructed with two interconnected concrete “covers,” linked by numerous ramps and floors. Ingenious aspects of its design include an inner shell that’s shaped like a half-shell, facing the sea. This not only adds to the overall aesthetic but also serves to echo the sounds of the coastline within the building itself.
Drawing inspiration from ancient solar rituals prevalent in this region, the structure is strategically designed to capture the sun at various angles. Within its walls, exhibition areas, a library, a café, and a bar have been thoughtfully constructed. Atop the building lies the “Phenomena Deck”, providing breathtaking vistas of the ocean.
As stated by the creators of the Sun Tower, Wenjing Huang and Li Hu, visitors can expect a rekindling of an age-old connection to wisdom. To them, this is essential in addressing the intensifying climate crisis, as it involves not just modifying our lifestyles but also our deeply held beliefs. In their view, such a change is crucial for our fight against the worsening environmental situation.
